Chapter 4 - The Guest Who Stopped Laughing
At first, Lauren Bishop laughed with the others.
She had known Victoria for three years.
She had watched her insult waiters, mock employees, and destroy friendships over minor disagreements.
But this was different.
Margaret was not pretending to be weak.
Her hands truly shook.
Her lips were dry.
Her eyes followed every piece of food that fell from the plate.
Lauren slowly lowered her champagne glass.
“Victoria,” she said carefully, “maybe we should get her something proper to eat.”
Victoria turned toward her.
The smile remained, but her eyes hardened.
“Margaret has eaten.”
Margaret looked up.
“No, I—”
Victoria kicked the edge of the plate.
“Don’t lie in front of my guests.”
Lauren’s stomach tightened.
The other women kept recording because they believed Victoria wanted a funny social media clip.
Lauren opened her phone too.
But she did not press the regular camera button.
She started a private video backup that automatically uploaded to cloud storage.
Victoria leaned closer to Margaret.
“Tell them why you’re outside.”
Margaret stared at the concrete.
Victoria grabbed the torn sleeve of her robe and pulled it upward.
Margaret’s body tilted, and she caught herself against the kennel.
“Say it.”
Margaret’s breathing became shallow.
“Because I asked for breakfast.”
One guest stopped smiling.
Another looked toward the mansion.
Victoria laughed louder, desperate to keep control of the moment.
“She steals food. She lies. She manipulates Ethan. And today, she tried to ruin my party.”
Margaret whispered, “It’s my birthday.”
Silence spread across the patio.
Even the fountain suddenly seemed too loud.
Lauren’s camera captured Victoria’s expression changing from amusement to fury.
“That’s enough,” Victoria hissed.
Then she reached for Margaret’s plate.
Before she could take it, Ethan spoke from behind them.
“Victoria.”
