Chapter 10 - AMELIA’S LETTER

There was one thing I had avoided since my wife died.

A box.

Amelia kept documents, birthday cards, and letters in a cedar chest in our bedroom.

After the funeral, Rebecca organized practical paperwork.

I never touched the personal side.

Nearly a year after Claire’s arrest, I opened it.

Not because I expected a clue.

Amelia had died before Claire abused Valerie.

There would be no supernatural warning.

No secret prediction.

I opened it because grief had finally become less frightening than avoidance.

Inside were letters Amelia wrote to the children while pregnant with Mateo.

One for his first birthday.

One for Valerie’s tenth.

One for me.

I read mine last.

Most of it was ordinary.

She teased my coffee.

Complained about my boots near the door.

Told me not to turn our children into “tiny soldiers.”

Then:

Daniel, if something ever happens to me, please remember that being strong for them does not mean knowing everything. Let people help you, but never hand away your responsibility to know your own children.

I put the letter down.

For a minute, I could not breathe.

Not because Amelia had predicted Claire.

Because she knew me.

I delegated well professionally.

At home, after her death, I delegated because I was drowning.

Claire did not create that vulnerability.

She exploited it.

There was a difference.

I could accept my failure without accepting responsibility for Claire’s abuse.

That distinction took almost a year of therapy.

I showed Valerie the parts of Amelia’s letters meant for her.

Not the one for age ten.

That belonged to her future.

For the first time since her mother died, Valerie asked to look at wedding photographs.

Healing had started somewhere I had not expected.
