Chapter 7 - REX

Rex changed after Claire left.

He began sleeping outside Valerie’s room.

He was eleven.

Retired from military working-dog service years earlier because of hip problems.

He had been mine before Amelia.

Then ours.

Then, after Amelia died, Valerie’s shadow.

I reviewed old home footage for the investigation and noticed something.

Whenever Claire approached Valerie sharply, Rex moved closer.

Not attacking.

Positioning.

On one clip, Claire pointed toward the pantry.

Rex stood between her and Valerie.

Claire pulled him away by the collar and shut him in the laundry room.

I remembered Claire complaining:

“Rex is getting possessive.”

I had considered veterinary behavioral evaluation.

The veterinarian found nothing abnormal.

“He’s responding to something,” she told me.

I assumed grief.

Maybe he was.

Maybe he was also reading a room better than I was.

We did not turn Rex into magical evidence.

Dogs cannot testify to motives.

But the recordings helped establish chronology.

Claire isolated him during some incidents.

That mattered.

Valerie noticed too.

“She didn’t like Rex watching.”

I asked:

“Did Rex ever bite her?”

“No.”

“Growl?”

“Sometimes.”

“What happened then?”

“She put him away.”

Another layer.

Not a secret mastermind.

A caregiver gradually removing obstacles to control.

Rex had been one.

I had been another.

My travel removed me automatically.

The security camera was the obstacle Claire underestimated.

She knew it existed.

She apparently believed it was no longer recording because I had once complained the subscription expired.

The cloud plan had expired.

Local recording had not.

That technical detail became critical.

May you like

Claire had not knowingly performed for a camera.

She thought it was dead.
