Chapter 11 - MATEO’S FIRST WORD

Mateo developed normally.

Every pediatric appointment felt like a verdict I had been waiting for.

Eventually I learned to stop treating normal milestones as proof we had escaped everything.

He was simply a little boy.

At fourteen months, his favorite activity was throwing food.

At sixteen months, he discovered Rex’s ears.

At seventeen months, his first clear word was:

“Rex.”

I objected.

Valerie celebrated for a week.

“Not Dad?”

“Nope.”

“I pay the mortgage.”

“Rex is cooler.”

Fair.

Valerie became protective of Mateo in a healthier way.

She helped when she wanted.

We created one rule:

She could be his sister.

Never his substitute parent.

If he cried while I cooked, she could make faces at him.

She did not have to pick him up.

If he dropped food, she could leave it.

If milk spilled, nobody panicked.

The first time a full cup hit the kitchen floor, Valerie froze.

I saw it.

Mateo stared at the puddle.

Rex started licking.

I grabbed towels.

“That’s it?”

Valerie asked.

“What?”

“You’re not mad?”

“It’s milk.”

She watched me clean.

Then slowly joined.

Not on her knees because someone ordered her.

May you like

Because we were both laughing while Rex made the problem worse.

That tiny moment mattered more than Claire’s sentencing.
