Chapter 5 - THE BRUISE WASN’T THE ONLY ONE

Medical examination documented the shoulder bruise.

Then Valerie mentioned her back.

No fractures.

No major internal injury.

Several older fading bruises existed along areas that could have resulted from ordinary childhood activity.

Doctors were careful.

Bruises do not carry labels identifying who caused them.

They documented size, location, color, tenderness.

Investigators compared those findings with Valerie’s account.

She said Claire sometimes grabbed her.

Once shoved her into a doorframe.

Once struck her upper back with a wooden spoon after Mateo’s bottle spilled.

Did every allegation produce physical proof?

No.

That did not mean investigators ignored them.

It meant they evaluated each separately.

The kitchen footage clearly documented rough physical handling on the final day.

Another clip showed Claire gripping Valerie’s upper arm and pulling her across the room.

The wooden-spoon allegation had no video.

Prosecutors would later decide what charges the evidence supported.

Meanwhile, Mateo remained medically well.

That became the one piece of news I could hold without qualification.

No evidence of significant injury.

No developmental concern identified during follow-up.

He was safe.

But another question emerged.

Why was Valerie caring for him so often?

Claire was supposed to be the caregiver.

The answer came from phone records obtained through proper legal process during the investigation.

Claire spent hours each day communicating with someone named Aaron Pike.

Not a lover.

Her former business partner.

Claire had been trying to launch a home-organization company.

While I believed she was caring for my children, she was conducting sales calls, building proposals, and leaving Valerie to manage Mateo during portions of those calls.

The abuse was not driven by hatred of Valerie.

It was driven by something uglier in its ordinariness.

Convenience.

Claire treated my daughter like unpaid childcare because Valerie was available and frightened enough to obey.

When Valerie failed, Claire punished her.

When she cried, Claire called her dramatic.

When she threatened to tell me, Claire invoked my work.

The system benefited Claire.

So she maintained it.

That explained her motive.

It did not excuse a second of it.
