Chapter 1 - The Plate at Her Feet

The porcelain plate shattered beside Maya Sterling’s bare feet.
A sharp white fragment skidded beneath the dining chair.
Maya flinched before Ethan even raised his hand again.
“Bring more food.”
Cold water dripped from her soaked white tank top and shorts, forming a puddle across the kitchen tile.
The window above the sink had been cracked open for nearly an hour.
Outside, December wind swept through the bare trees of suburban Boston.
Inside, Maya’s fingers had turned blue.
Ethan’s mother, Beatrice, lifted her wine glass.
“She still has not learned service.”
Maya lowered her eyes.
That was what Ethan wanted.
Do not answer.
Do not embarrass him.
Do not make his mother uncomfortable.
Her own mother stood near the dining area, still wearing her dark winter coat.
Mrs. Sterling had arrived ten minutes earlier and had said almost nothing.
But she had seen everything.
The wet clothes.
The bruised wrist.
The food Maya had cooked but was not allowed to eat.
The instinctive way Maya protected her face when Ethan stepped closer.
Mrs. Sterling removed her phone.
Ethan laughed.
“Calling the police over a dish?”
“No,” she said.
She pressed one contact and held the phone where he could briefly see the blurred profile image.
“The owner.”
Ethan’s smile disappeared.
“Why do you have that number?”
Mrs. Sterling opened her handbag.
Inside was a dark document folder.
A brass key was clipped to its edge.
Beatrice set down her wine glass too quickly.
Red wine spilled across the white tablecloth.
Mrs. Sterling looked at Maya’s soaked clothes, then at the freezing window.
“Tell him the winter clause was broken.”
The call stopped ringing.
Someone had answered.
Mrs. Sterling crossed the kitchen and closed the window.
Then a heavy electronic lock clicked at the front entrance.
Everyone turned.
The handle began rotating from outside.
Mrs. Sterling removed the brass key and placed it beside the shattered plate.
“You signed it,” she told Ethan. “You just never read it.”
The front door opened two inches.
May you like
A dark silhouette stood beyond it.
And for the first time since Maya married him, Ethan looked afraid inside the house he claimed belonged to him.
