Chapter 3 - The Signature Beneath the Clause

Ethan reached for the folder.

Mrs. Sterling pulled it away.

“I want to see what I signed.”

“You received a copy,” Nathaniel said.

“No, I didn’t.”

“You initialed every page.”

Beatrice suddenly spoke.

“He was under pressure before the wedding.”

Nathaniel turned toward her.

“Were you present?”

Beatrice said nothing.

Mrs. Sterling opened the folder.

Maya saw Ethan’s signature at the bottom of the final page.

Above it were several clauses.

One protected Maya’s ownership rights.

One prevented a spouse from borrowing against the property.

One prohibited any transfer without her written consent.

And one addressed abuse.

Emotional coercion.

Financial restriction.

Unsafe living conditions.

Physical intimidation.

Ethan stared at the page.

“You set me up.”

Maya’s mother remained calm.

“No. You demanded to move into a house that was not yours.”

“You told me it would become marital property.”

“No. Your mother told you that.”

Ethan turned sharply toward Beatrice.

Her face revealed the truth before she answered.

Beatrice had assured him the trust could be challenged after Maya’s grandfather died.

She believed marriage gave Ethan leverage.

She believed Maya would eventually sign over control.

“You said this was temporary,” Ethan whispered.

Beatrice lifted her chin.

“It should have been.”

Maya finally spoke.

“You knew?”

Ethan looked at her.

“Maya—”

“You knew this home belonged to my family.”

“I knew there were documents.”

“And you let me believe you bought it for us.”

“I paid for renovations.”

Nathaniel opened another section.

“Using funds withdrawn from Maya’s inheritance account.”

Ethan froze.

Maya stared at him.

“What inheritance account?”

Her mother closed her eyes briefly.

Nathaniel answered carefully.

“The account your husband has been managing under a limited financial authorization.”

Maya’s knees weakened.

Ethan had told her the inheritance was tied up in probate.

He had said there was nothing available.

He had made her ask for grocery money.

He had monitored every purchase.

Meanwhile, he had been spending her inheritance on a house already owned by her trust.

The shattered plate no longer felt like the worst thing in the room.
