Chapter 11 - The Papers Maya Refused to Sign

Three nights earlier, Ethan brought Maya a stack of documents.

He said they were tax forms.

She began reading.

He became angry.

“Just sign.”

“I don’t understand this section.”

“It’s standard.”

“It says property consolidation.”

“That’s accounting language.”

Maya refused.

Ethan did not hit her.

He did something more familiar.

He removed her phone.

Locked the bedroom door from outside.

Turned off the heat.

He returned two hours later and asked:

“Ready to cooperate?”

Maya signed nothing.

The next morning, Beatrice arrived.

She praised Ethan for “finally becoming firm.”

Then she assigned Maya chores normally handled by staff.

Cooking.

Cleaning.

Washing dishes by hand.

Standing barefoot beside the open window.

They called it discipline.

Maya called it what it was now.

Coercion.

Mrs. Sterling documented the bruise on Maya’s wrist.

“Did Ethan cause this?”

Maya looked at him.

His eyes warned her.

The old fear rose.

Then she remembered the front lock opening.

Nathaniel arriving.

The folder.

The clause.

The house recognizing her voice.

“Yes,” she said.

Ethan’s face changed.

“It was an accident.”

“You grabbed me when I tried to leave.”

“You were hysterical.”

“I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

Maya looked directly at him.

May you like

“You.”

The word ended whatever remained between them.
