Chapter 2 - The House Ethan Never Owned

The man outside did not enter immediately.
He waited until Mrs. Sterling said:
“You can come in, Mr. Hale.”
Ethan stepped backward.
“No.”
An older man in a charcoal overcoat entered the hallway carrying a leather case.
Maya had seen him only once before.
At her wedding.
He had introduced himself as Nathaniel Hale, an old business friend of Maya’s late grandfather.
Ethan had dismissed him as “some retired lawyer.”
Nathaniel closed the front door.
“I wish we were meeting under different circumstances.”
Beatrice stood.
“You have no authority here.”
Nathaniel looked at her.
“That statement is precisely why your son is in trouble.”
He walked into the kitchen but stopped when he saw the shattered plate.
Then his eyes moved to Maya.
Her wet hair.
Her trembling hands.
Her bare feet.
The faint bruise near her wrist.
His expression hardened.
“Mrs. Sterling, did you record the condition of the property?”
Maya’s mother held up her phone.
“From the moment I entered.”
Ethan moved toward her.
“Delete it.”
Nathaniel stepped between them.
“Do not touch her.”
“This is my house.”
“No,” Nathaniel said. “It is not.”
Silence filled the kitchen.
Nathaniel opened the leather case.
“The property is owned by the Sterling-Hale Residential Trust.”
Maya looked at her mother.
“What?”
Mrs. Sterling’s eyes softened.
“Your grandfather placed the house in trust before he died.”
Ethan laughed nervously.
“That’s impossible. I signed the purchase documents.”
“You signed an occupancy agreement,” Nathaniel said.
Beatrice’s face tightened.
She knew.
Maya realized it instantly.
“You knew this house wasn’t his.”
Beatrice looked away.
Nathaniel continued.
“Ethan was permitted to live here as Maya’s spouse, under specific conditions.”
Mrs. Sterling touched the dark folder.
“One of them was called the winter clause.”
Ethan looked from the folder to Maya.
“What does it say?”
Nathaniel’s gaze fell on the icy puddle around Maya’s feet.
“It says no beneficiary may be denied heat, food, clothing, medical care, or safe access to the property.”
Maya’s throat tightened.
Nathaniel looked at Ethan.
May you like
“You did not merely insult your wife.”
“You activated an automatic termination of your occupancy rights.”
