Chapter 5 - The Voice Activation

Nathaniel placed the device on the table.

“No recording will be played without Maya’s permission.”

Ethan pointed at it.

“You were spying on us.”

“The system activates only after a trust beneficiary speaks the emergency phrase.”

Maya frowned.

“What phrase?”

Mrs. Sterling looked at her.

“Your grandfather taught it to you when you were little.”

Maya searched her memory.

A winter storm.

The old house losing power.

Her grandfather wrapping her in blankets.

If the house ever stops being safe, say: This home is no longer warm.

Maya’s lips parted.

She had spoken those words that afternoon.

Not intentionally.

She had been standing at the sink while Beatrice reopened the window.

Maya whispered to herself:

“This home is no longer warm.”

The trust system had recognized it.

The call went to Nathaniel.

Then to Mrs. Sterling.

Beatrice moved toward the hallway.

Nathaniel blocked her.

“Stay.”

“You cannot detain me.”

“No. But you may want to explain why you attempted to disable the monitoring panel last month.”

Ethan turned toward his mother.

“You did what?”

Beatrice’s composure cracked.

“It was a privacy violation.”

“You said the panel controlled the alarm.”

“It does.”

“It also protects Maya,” Nathaniel said.

Beatrice looked at Ethan.

“Don’t say another word.”

That warning confirmed they had more to hide.

Mrs. Sterling looked at Maya.

“Would you like to hear the activation recording?”

Maya’s throat tightened.

She nodded.

Nathaniel pressed play.

Maya heard her own voice:

“This home is no longer warm.”

Then Ethan:

“Keep washing.”

Beatrice:

“Cold water teaches discipline.”

A chair moved.

Maya’s breath trembled.

Then came Ethan’s voice again:

“If she leaves, we lose the house.”

The recording ended.

Maya looked at him.

Not “I lose my wife.”

May you like

Not “she leaves me.”

We lose the house.
