Chapter 7 - The First Time Maya Said No

Ethan moved toward Maya.
Mrs. Sterling stepped between them.
He stopped.
“Maya, listen to me.”
She looked at him through tears that no longer felt helpless.
“No.”
He blinked.
It was a small word.
But he had not heard it from her in years.
“You are emotional.”
“No.”
“We need to discuss this privately.”
“No.”
“Your mother is manipulating you.”
“No.”
Each refusal stripped something from him.
Authority.
Certainty.
The belief that she would always fold.
Beatrice picked up her handbag.
“This conversation is over.”
Nathaniel looked toward the entrance.
“You may leave.”
Ethan exhaled in relief.
Nathaniel continued:
“But you may not remove anything purchased with trust funds.”
Beatrice froze.
“That includes the jewelry, vehicle keys, documents, and electronic devices currently inside the property.”
“My pearls are mine.”
Nathaniel opened a receipt.
“Purchased from Maya’s account.”
Beatrice touched the necklace.
Maya looked at her.
“Take them off.”
Beatrice stared at her.
Maya repeated, calmly:
“Take them off.”
For one second, Beatrice seemed ready to refuse.
Then she noticed the security lens above the hallway.
She unclasped the pearls.
Placed them on the dining table.
Ethan whispered:
“Maya, don’t do this.”
She looked at the shattered plate.
The open window.
The wet dishes.
The bruise on her wrist.
“I’m not doing this.”
She lifted her eyes.
“I’m stopping it.”
Nathaniel handed Ethan a formal notice.
His occupancy rights were suspended pending investigation.
He had thirty minutes to gather personal clothing under supervision.

The house he believed he controlled had rejected him through a document he signed himself.
And the winter clause was only the beginning.
