Chapter 12 - Eleanor’s Letter

My father rolled forward through the stunned guests.

He looked pale, but his voice was steady.

“Sienna’s mother, Claire Vale, worked for our family company twenty-eight years ago.”

Sienna’s breathing became shallow.

“She told me your family stole her designs.”

My father shook his head.

“Claire stole from the company.”

“No.”

“She diverted vendor payments into a private account. Eleanor discovered it.”

“You’re lying.”

“She could have prosecuted her. She didn’t.”

My father held up the blue envelope.

“Claire was pregnant with you. Eleanor knew prison would destroy two lives, so she repaid the stolen money herself and allowed Claire to resign quietly.”

Sienna’s face lost color.

“My mother said Eleanor threatened her.”

“Eleanor required her to sign a confession in exchange for keeping the matter private.”

I remembered stories Sienna had told me in college.

Her mother blamed wealthy people for every hardship.

She said powerful families had destroyed her career.

She taught Sienna that people like me inherited everything while people like them were forced to beg.

Sienna had not entered my life accidentally.

She had chosen me.

My grandmother’s letter confirmed it.

Evelyn opened the envelope and read aloud.

Claire’s daughter may one day hear a version of this story built from anger. If she enters Maya’s life, watch whether she comes seeking friendship or repayment for a debt that was never owed.

A sound escaped Sienna’s throat.

Half laugh.

Half sob.

“You knew?”

“I didn’t,” I said.

My grandmother had protected me without poisoning me against a child.

She gave Sienna the chance to become someone different from her mother.

So had I.

I paid Sienna’s rent after her divorce.

I hired her.

I trusted her with donor accounts.

I invited her into my family.

Sienna touched the pearls again.

“She owed these to my mother.”

“No,” my father said. “Your mother tried to steal them once before.”

The guests murmured.

Claire had attempted to take the pearls from Eleanor’s dressing room on the day she resigned. Security stopped her at the gate.

The incident had never been reported.

Eleanor kept it quiet for Sienna’s sake.

Sienna stared at me with tears in her eyes.

For one moment, I saw the wounded girl beneath the cruelty.

Then she hardened.

“My mother died believing your family ruined her.”

“And you decided to ruin mine,” I said.

Sirens sounded beyond the estate gates.

Sienna looked toward the driveway.

Her panic became real.

👉 The authorities had arrived for the financial fraud—but Sienna still possessed one stolen document capable of placing the entire estate in legal danger.
