Chapter 1 - Take Off Her Pearls
“Take off her pearls.”
My voice carried farther than the string quartet.
The violinist’s bow stopped in midair.
Two hundred wedding guests turned toward the gravel aisle as I stood beneath the afternoon sun, dressed in a white pantsuit, holding my phone directly at my husband and the woman wearing my grandmother’s earrings.
Landon’s face went rigid.
Sienna’s bouquet slipped against her ivory dress.
For one terrible second, nobody moved.
Then Landon pulled her against his chest as though I were an intruder at their wedding.
Their wedding.
In my family’s garden.
Under the rose-covered arch where he had promised me forever seven years earlier.
“You weren’t supposed to be here,” Landon said.
He stepped toward me and reached for my phone.
I planted my palm against his chest.
His heel scraped across the gravel as I stopped him cold.
“I live here,” I said.
A murmur rolled through the guests.
Sienna’s fingers rose toward one pearl earring, then froze.
I looked past Landon and met her eyes.
“You used my trust.”
Her confidence cracked.
“Landon, stop her.”
He looked at her.
Not with affection.
With confusion.
I rotated my phone toward him and tapped the screen. The document displayed there was blurred from the guests’ angle, but Landon recognized the bank insignia immediately.
His hand loosened from Sienna’s shoulder.
“Then explain the transfer,” I whispered.
The color drained from his face.
He backed into a champagne table, making one crystal glass tremble against the polished surface.
Sienna gripped his sleeve.
“What transfer?” she asked too quickly.
Landon stared at her pearl earrings.
Then at my phone.
Then back at her.
I tapped one final control.
A security recording waited on the screen.
