Chapter 6 - The Locked Room

Rosa searched the estate carefully.
She discovered that the lock on my home office had been replaced. Landon claimed the room contained confidential wedding gifts, but Rosa heard voices inside late Thursday night.
She positioned one of the restored security cameras toward the hallway.
At 11:43 p.m., Dr. Cole entered the office.
Sienna followed him.
Landon arrived several minutes later carrying a folder from my father’s private files.
The camera had no audio, but another device did.
My grandmother had installed an old intercom system throughout the estate. It had been disconnected years ago, yet one line still fed into the security control room.
Rosa recorded what came through it.
Dr. Cole demanded more money.
He admitted the medical letter would not survive serious review because he had never performed a formal evaluation.
Sienna told him it only needed to delay me for seventy-two hours.
“What happens after seventy-two hours?” Landon asked.
“The money clears,” she replied. “The estate petition is active. By the time Maya proves anything, we’re married and protected.”
Landon lowered his voice.
“And Maya?”
Dr. Cole answered.
“She’ll be held for observation if she behaves irrationally.”
I stopped the recording.
My stomach twisted.
They intended to provoke me at the wedding.
If I screamed, struck someone, or appeared confused in front of hundreds of witnesses, Dr. Cole would use the scene to validate his false report.
They did not fear my arrival.
They had prepared for it.
“They want you emotional,” Evelyn said. “So you must be the calmest person in that garden.”
That became my weapon.
No threats.
No public breakdown.
No physical retaliation.
Only questions, documents, recordings, and their own words.
Evelyn contacted the county judge who supervised the estate trust. She provided enough evidence to obtain an emergency order blocking every transfer.
The order remained sealed until Sunday afternoon.
We also learned the wedding officiant had been told Landon’s divorce was finalized.
When Evelyn warned him privately, he agreed not to perform a legal ceremony. He would continue until the objections began, then stop.
The guests would still believe they were attending a wedding.
Landon and Sienna would still speak as if their plan had succeeded.
And I would capture it.
On Saturday night, I flew quietly to California.
I stayed in a small hotel twelve miles from my own home.
At dawn, Rosa brought me a garment bag.
Inside was the fitted white pantsuit my grandmother had worn when she won control of the family company.
Pinned inside the collar was a handwritten note Rosa had found in the blue envelope.
Kindness is not surrender.
I folded the note into my pocket.
May you like
Then I picked up my phone and drove toward the wedding.
👉 Maya was ready for the confrontation, but the person waiting outside the estate gates carried evidence that even Sienna had never seen.
