Chapter 4 - Declared Unstable

The forged transfer application included an attachment.

A physician’s statement.

According to the document, I had suffered a severe emotional breakdown after my father’s stroke. It claimed I was confused, impulsive, and temporarily unable to manage large financial decisions.

The letter bore the name of Dr. Adrian Cole, a specialist my father had hired during my first week in Boston.

I remembered him clearly.

He had asked unusual questions.

Was I sleeping?

Did I feel persecuted?

Had I become suspicious of people close to me?

At the time, I thought he was helping me manage stress.

Now his answers had been rewritten to make me appear unstable.

“Could this be used to remove me as trustee?” I asked.

“Not by itself,” Evelyn said. “But combined with your medical power of attorney and a petition from your spouse, it could freeze your control temporarily.”

Long enough to move the money.

Long enough to seize the estate.

Long enough to portray me as a hysterical wife disrupting a lawful wedding after a private separation.

That was their plan.

Not merely to betray me.

To erase my credibility before I could expose them.

Evelyn contacted Dr. Cole’s hospital.

He had resigned two days earlier.

His office had been cleared.

His number was disconnected.

Landon finally returned my call that evening.

He sounded calm.

Too calm.

“How’s your dad?”

“Improving.”

“That’s great.”

I looked at the forged physician’s letter on the table.

“What’s happening at the estate?”

A pause.

“Just foundation work.”

“What kind?”

“Sienna’s handling it.”

Behind him, I heard music.

Then a woman laughed.

Sienna.

Landon moved somewhere quieter.

“You sound strange,” he said. “Have you been sleeping?”

The question chilled me.

It was almost identical to the wording in the medical report.

“I’m exhausted,” I said carefully.

“You should let the doctors help you.”

“Maybe I should.”

He relaxed.

I could hear it in his breath.

Before hanging up, he added, “Don’t rush home. Everything here is under control.”

After the call, Evelyn looked at me.

“He knows about the medical strategy.”

“Yes.”

The last part of me that wanted to believe he had been manipulated went silent.

Then my father, weak but fully awake, spoke from his chair near the window.

“Your husband asked me to sign something last month.”

I turned.

“What?”

“He said it would protect you if I died.”

My father’s hand trembled as he reached for his phone.

“I refused. But I took a photograph.”

The image showed Landon standing beside Sienna in my father’s office.

Between them lay a document titled Petition for Emergency Control.
