Chapter 5 - The Reflection

At first, the photograph seemed straightforward.
Landon stood beside my father’s desk.
Sienna held the petition.
Dr. Cole waited near the door.
Then Evelyn enlarged the glass cabinet behind them.
The cabinet reflected the room from another angle.
In that reflection, Sienna was holding a second document behind her back.
The top corner showed part of a title.
Marriage Dissolution Agreement.
“They prepared divorce papers,” I said.
Evelyn studied the image.
“Not necessarily real ones.”
We searched California court records.
No divorce petition had ever been filed.
Landon and I were still legally married.
Yet wedding invitations had already been sent describing him as a divorced man.
Evelyn obtained one through a florist who had questioned the billing address.
The invitation claimed Landon and Sienna were celebrating “a love that survived years of secrecy and sacrifice.”
Years.
Their affair had not begun during my father’s illness.
It had been happening while Sienna sat across from me at Thanksgiving.
While Landon held my hand at charity galas.
While both of them comforted me after my grandmother died.
The discovery hurt more than I expected.
Not because I still wanted Landon.
Because they had built their happiness out of moments I had believed were real.
My father reached across the table.
“You don’t have to face them alone.”
“I won’t.”
Evelyn developed a plan.
We would not warn them.
We would let the wedding proceed.
The financial crimes unit would receive our documents, but we would ask investigators not to intervene until we had preserved direct evidence of intent.
Rosa would return to the estate pretending she knew nothing.
The security company would restore access to cameras Landon thought he had disabled.
And I would remain publicly in Boston.
Sienna watched my social media, so I posted an old photograph from my father’s hospital room.
She reacted with a heart.
An hour later, Rosa sent me an image from the estate.
Sienna stood before my bedroom mirror wearing my grandmother’s pearls.
Landon was behind her.
His hands rested on her shoulders.
Rosa had captured the image through a half-open door.
But the security camera recorded something more.
Sienna removed one pearl earring and handed it to Landon.
“After Sunday,” she said, “she won’t own any of this.”
Landon stared at the pearl in his palm.
Then he asked the question that would later destroy them both.
“And if Maya fights the petition?”
Sienna smiled at her reflection.
May you like
“She won’t be allowed to.”
👉 Maya had enough evidence to expose the affair, but she still needed to discover what Sienna meant by making sure Maya would not be allowed to fight back.
