Chapter 16 - THE FAILED CONFRONTATION

Melissa answered Daniel’s call at 7:03 p.m.

He didn’t accuse her.

That was the plan.

“Where are you?”

“At home.”

“You left without saying goodbye.”

“The reception was over.”

“Can you come back to the office?”

Pause.

“Tonight?”

“Something’s wrong with the acquisition files.”

Another pause.

Then Melissa said, “Ask your father.”

The call ended.

Daniel looked at Charles.

Charles looked furious.

“She knows we’re investigating.”

I disagreed.

“She knows something is wrong. That isn’t the same thing.”

Daniel hated my caution.

He drove to Bennett Development with Charles and Rachel.

I took Lily home.

That was the hardest choice I made all day.

Part of me wanted to follow every clue personally.

The better part remembered I was a mother before I was an investigator.

Lily needed food, a bath, quiet, and sleep.

While I changed her into pajamas, she kept asking for her picture.

“Tomorrow, baby.”

“Picture.”

“I know.”

She touched her wrist.

“Lady mean.”

My throat tightened.

“Yes.”

I photographed the mark again.

Then I sat beside her crib until she fell asleep.

At 8:16, Daniel called.

Melissa had not come to the office.

Her desk had been cleared.

Not emptied completely.

Cleared selectively.

Laptop gone.

Personal items gone.

Company files remained.

That looked like flight.

Then Rachel found something that made it stranger.

Melissa had submitted her resignation at 3:42 p.m.

Before Ethan was found.

Before the vault.

Before Laura’s recorder.

Before we identified her badge.

“She knew something would happen today,” I said.

Daniel agreed.

Security footage showed Melissa leaving the building at noon carrying a laptop bag.

Hotel footage showed her arriving at the wedding at 2:05.

At 2:31, she entered Vanessa’s bridal suite.

At 2:36, she left.

At 2:40, Daniel entered with Lily.

The discarded papers were already there.

Melissa had opportunity to plant Laura’s note.

But why?

To expose the fraud?

Or frame Vanessa?

Then we found the failure in our plan.

While Daniel and Charles focused on Melissa’s office access, someone remotely wiped her company laptop.

The device was no longer connected, but its management account had received a deletion command at 7:11.

Eight minutes after Daniel called her.

Charles exploded.

“Martin.”

Rachel stopped him.

“We don’t know.”

Daniel checked administrator permissions.

Three people could issue that command.

IT director.

Charles Bennett.

And Daniel Bennett.

Neither Daniel nor Charles had done it.

The IT director was contacted.

He denied it.

System logs showed the command originated from Charles’s administrator credentials.

Charles stared at the screen.

“That’s impossible.”

Daniel’s voice went flat.

“Your credentials too?”

Charles looked suddenly old.

Someone wasn’t merely stealing money.

They had built a system where every meaningful action could be attributed to a Bennett.

Then my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

Melissa.

She was sitting inside a parked car, holding that day’s newspaper.

Alive.

Underneath was one sentence:
