Chapter 24 - THE LAST TRANSFER

At 9:41 a.m., the forensic accountant shouted from the conference room.

“Stop everything.”

We were already too late.

A transfer request for $6.2 million had entered Bennett Development’s payment system at 9:38.

It carried Charles’s authorization credentials.

Howard’s approval token.

And Daniel’s digital signature.

All three men were standing in the same room when it happened.

For the first time, the fraud exposed itself in real time.

“Freeze it,” Charles said.

The accountant was already calling the bank.

The transfer had entered a processing queue but had not settled.

A hold request went out.

Nobody celebrated.

The money was not safe until the bank confirmed the stop.

Then the company network began locking users out.

Martin’s final step wasn’t only money.

He was destroying access.

IT isolated affected systems.

Backup servers remained intact because they had been separated during the previous night’s preservation effort.

Our earlier caution paid off.

But the crisis widened.

News of the investigation leaked.

A financial reporter called Bennett Development.

A lender requested clarification.

Two independent directors demanded Charles resign immediately.

Daniel’s face went white as his phone filled with alerts.

“This is what Dad was afraid of.”

Charles stared at the screen.

“Yes.”

“And hiding it made it worse.”

“Yes.”

No argument.

That was growth too.

Then Rachel received the custody hearing notice.

The emergency review had been moved forward because of the seriousness of the allegations.

I had to leave.

Daniel looked at me.

“I’ll come.”

“No.”

He blinked.

“You need to stay here.”

“Claire—”

“Lily needs one parent dealing with this custody lie and one dealing with the financial attack.”

For years, our marriage had failed because every crisis became a contest over who controlled it.

This time we divided responsibility.

Rachel came with me.

Vanessa came too.

At the courthouse, she signed a sworn statement acknowledging that she had grabbed Lily’s wrist and hair, that I intervened to protect our daughter, and that she had not authorized the petition filed in her name.

Writing those facts cost her.

I watched her hand shake.

She signed anyway.

The judge reviewed the limited emergency record.

No final custody determination was made.

But the request to restrict me immediately was denied.

The court ordered preservation of relevant evidence and scheduled further proceedings if necessary.

I walked out still Lily’s mother with the same custody rights I had walked in with.

That was enough.

Then Daniel called.

The $6.2 million transfer had been stopped.

But his voice sounded wrong.

“What happened?”

“Martin’s gone.”

My stomach dropped.

“Gone where?”

“His office is empty.”

“Did anyone contact authorities?”

“Yes.”

“And Howard?”

“Cooperating.”

“Then what’s wrong?”

Daniel went silent.

Finally:

“They found Martin’s transaction ledger.”

I stopped walking.

“And?”

“There’s a payment from three years ago.”

“To whom?”

Daniel’s voice broke.

“To Vanessa.”

She stood beside me.

I looked at her.

“How much?”

“Four hundred thousand.”

Vanessa whispered, “No.”

Daniel continued.

“The memo says: BENNETT DIVORCE.”

Every eye turned toward me.

Three years earlier was when my marriage to Daniel had collapsed.

And suddenly the fraud had reached backward into the most painful decision of my life.

📖 Martin’s ledger suggested Vanessa had been financially connected to my divorce long before the wedding, forcing her to confront the secret she had never admitted. 👇
