Chapter 6 - WHAT DADDY GAVE HER

“I didn’t give Lily that drawing.”
Daniel said it before I could ask.
Lily looked at him.
“Daddy gave.”
Vanessa folded her arms.
“Well, there you go.”
I ignored her.
Daniel crouched several feet from Lily, careful not to crowd her.
“Sweetheart, what did Daddy give you?”
Lily pointed at the torn paper.
His face tightened.
Then he looked at me.
“I gave her paper this morning.”
“What paper?”
“A coloring page.”
Vanessa’s confidence faltered.
Daniel explained that he had spent twenty minutes with Lily before the ceremony. She had been restless, so he found several blank-backed printouts in the bridal suite and gave her crayons.
“Printouts of what?”
“I didn’t look.”
I stared at him.
“You gave our toddler documents from Vanessa’s room without looking at them?”
“They were face down in a recycling tray.”
Vanessa snapped, “You had no right to take anything from my office area.”
Daniel slowly stood.
“Why?”
Her mouth closed.
I unfolded Lily’s surviving half.
The family drawing was on the blank side.
The numbers and partial name were on the reverse.
Daniel hadn’t knowingly given Lily evidence.
He had unknowingly handed her a discarded document.
That was the reward.
The bigger question was obvious.
Why had Vanessa discarded it?
Daniel pulled up a photograph he had taken that morning.
Lily sat on the carpet surrounded by crayons and three sheets of paper.
I zoomed in.
One sheet showed part of a typed heading on its reverse edge.
TRANSFER AUTH—
Vanessa reached for the phone.
Daniel stepped away.
“Don’t.”
Her jaw clenched.
“You’re humiliating me at my own wedding.”
“You grabbed my daughter by the hair.”
“She shouldn’t have been in my suite!”
The sentence detonated between us.
I stared at her.
“That’s why you attacked her?”
Vanessa realized too late what she had admitted.
She changed tactics immediately.
“She went through private things.”
“She’s fifteen months old.”
“She destroyed paperwork.”
“What paperwork?”
Vanessa stopped.
Daniel’s eyes hardened.
I had never seen him look at her that way.
Then hotel security called again.
They had found Ethan.
He was alive.
He had been located in a service stairwell two floors below the ballroom.
Daniel nearly dropped the phone.
“Is he hurt?”
Conscious.
Bruised.
Disoriented.
An ambulance had been requested.
I closed my eyes for half a second.
Relief.
Then the guard added something else.
Ethan said he had fallen.
But a hotel employee had found a broken cuff link on the landing above him.
Daniel wore plain black cuff links.
Ethan’s were silver.
Vanessa’s father and two of her brothers wore matching gold ones.
That meant nothing by itself.
Then security sent Daniel a photograph.
The broken cuff link was gold.
Its face carried a tiny engraved letter.
V.
Vanessa stared at the image.
“That isn’t mine.”
“No,” Daniel said.
He enlarged it.
“I gave these to your family this morning.”
Vanessa’s breathing changed.
“Daniel—”
“Who was in that stairwell with Ethan?”
She stepped backward.
May you like
And for the first time since Lily screamed, Vanessa looked less like a woman protecting a secret than someone protecting a person.
📖 The cuff link narrowed the circle around Vanessa’s family, but Ethan was finally alive—and what he remembered threatened to fracture the wedding beyond repair. 👇
