Chapter 19 - MELISSA’S CHOICE

“Did you see Martin take Laura’s phone?”

I moved closer to Daniel’s speaker.

Melissa answered me.

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Laura’s house.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why were you there?”

Melissa took several seconds.

“Because Laura called me.”

The night Laura died, Melissa had gone to her home after receiving a frightened voicemail.

Laura was alive when she arrived.

Short of breath.

Sweating.

Complaining of pressure in her chest.

Melissa called 911.

While they waited, Martin arrived.

“How did he know?” Daniel asked.

“I don’t know.”

“Did he touch Laura?”

“No.”

That mattered.

Melissa was not claiming murder.

She said Martin knelt beside Laura, spoke calmly, and told her help was coming.

Paramedics arrived minutes later.

During the confusion, Melissa saw Martin remove Laura’s phone from the kitchen counter and slip it into his coat.

“Why didn’t you tell police?”

“He told me it was a company phone.”

“Was it?”

“No.”

“Then why stay silent?”

Melissa’s breathing shook.

“Because the next morning he sent me a photograph of my mother leaving church.”

There was the coercion.

Not melodrama.

Not an assassin.

A simple message: I know where your family is.

Melissa began secretly copying records after that.

Laura had already taught her how to preserve transaction metadata.

“Did you plant the note in Vanessa’s bridal suite?” I asked.

“Yes.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Why there?”

“I knew you’d take Lily there before the ceremony. I thought you would see the writing on the back before giving her the paper.”

“You used my daughter.”

“I never meant Lily to find it.”

“But she did.”

“I’m sorry.”

Anger rose through me so fast I had to put the phone down for a second.

Melissa had tried to expose a fraud.

She had also placed sensitive evidence where my toddler could touch it.

Good intentions did not erase reckless choices.

That theme was becoming painfully repetitive across every adult involved.

Daniel asked where the other half came from.

Melissa had planted both halves together.

Someone removed one before Daniel entered the suite.

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

That meant Martin might have an accomplice at the wedding.

Or someone had independently found it.

Melissa then offered something valuable.

A backup of Laura’s photographs.

She had copied them before Martin took Laura’s phone.

“Where?”

“Encrypted cloud storage.”

Rachel asked whether Melissa would provide them voluntarily and speak to investigators.

Silence.

Then:

“If you protect my mother.”

Rachel carefully explained she could help coordinate counsel and relay the threat to authorities, but she could not promise protection she didn’t control.

Melissa appreciated the honesty.

She agreed.

At 1:07 a.m., the photographs arrived.

Most showed documents.

One showed Martin’s fraud folder.

One showed Vanessa’s LLC paperwork.

And one showed Martin handing the folder to a man whose face was turned away.

Grant had mistaken him for Daniel.

I almost did too.

Same height.

Same dark suit.

Same build.

But his left hand was visible.

A heavy signet ring.

Daniel never wore one.

Charles did.

Daniel stared at the image.

“No.”

Then Charles lifted his own hand.

His signet ring was gone.

📖 Laura’s photograph seemed to place Charles with Martin, but the missing ring created a new problem: someone may have deliberately dressed himself as Daniel using Charles’s jewelry. 👇
