Chapter 21 - ROBERT’S RECEIPTS
Robert had saved every message.
That was the smartest thing anyone had done all day.
Martin first contacted him three weeks earlier.
He claimed Vanessa had unknowingly become involved in questionable financial transactions.
He told Robert that if certain documents surfaced, Vanessa could face devastating accusations.
Then he offered to “help contain the misunderstanding.”
Robert believed him.
Vanessa stared at her father.
“You never told me?”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“By giving him evidence?”
“I thought the evidence was against you.”
I watched her absorb the same lesson she had forced on everyone else.
Secrecy disguised as protection was still secrecy.
Robert showed us the wedding-day messages.
At 2:46 p.m., Martin texted:
A CHILD MAY HAVE PICKED UP A DOCUMENT FROM THE BRIDAL SUITE. RETRIEVE IT QUIETLY.
That was before Vanessa attacked Lily.
Martin knew the note had been planted.
How?
Melissa had planted it.
Only Melissa knew.
Unless Martin was monitoring her.
Melissa had said he threatened her.
Rachel asked Robert whether Martin told him where to find the page.
“Yes. Near the family table.”
That placed Martin’s knowledge dangerously close to real time.
Robert retrieved the second half after Lily dropped it.
The elderly witness mistook him for Ethan.
He photographed it at home and sent Martin the image.
He still possessed the physical paper.
My pulse jumped.
“Where?”
Robert went to a kitchen drawer and returned with an envelope.
Inside was the torn half.
Finally.
We placed it beside Lily’s half without taping or altering either piece.
The handwriting aligned.
Laura’s full note read:
$2.4M — BENSON COPY.
IF THEY USE LILY’S TRUST, CHECK DANIEL’S OFFICE TERMINAL.
M.S. HAS CREDENTIAL COPIES.
C.B. NORTHSTAR HISTORY = LEVERAGE.
M.G. MAY BE WATCHED.
M.S.
Martin Shaw.
C.B.
Charles Bennett.
M.G.
Melissa Grant.
Laura had mapped almost the entire scheme in shorthand.
But one line remained below the tear.
PARTNER GETS 20%.
No initials.
No name.
Martin had a partner.
The missing decisive link.
Daniel sat back.
“We’re still missing who helped him inside the company.”
Melissa had been monitored.
Ethan had been framed.
Charles had been leveraged.
Daniel’s credentials had been stolen.
Vanessa had been manipulated.
Who remained?
Then Robert remembered another message.
Martin once asked him whether “the board package” had arrived at Vanessa’s house.
Robert didn’t understand it.
Charles did.
Board packages were delivered only to directors.
Vanessa wasn’t a director.
Robert wasn’t.
Daniel and Ethan weren’t currently directors either.
Charles was.
So were six independent members.
One of them had attended the wedding.
Charles opened the guest list.
His finger stopped on a name.
Howard Pike.
Bennett Development’s longtime audit committee chairman.
The man responsible for overseeing financial controls.
