Chapter 18 - THE DEADLINE

“Release everything.”

Daniel said it before Charles finished reading Martin’s threat.

Charles stared at him.

“You understand what that means?”

“Yes.”

“Lenders could freeze negotiations.”

“Yes.”

“The board could remove us.”

“Yes.”

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“That’s what happens when you spend years hiding things because they’re embarrassing.”

Charles looked wounded.

Good.

Truth should hurt sometimes.

Rachel recommended a controlled disclosure to outside counsel, the board’s audit committee, the company’s insurer, and appropriate authorities—not a public social-media confession.

Reality mattered.

You didn’t solve suspected multimillion-dollar fraud by shouting accusations into a ballroom.

Charles finally agreed.

At 10:14 p.m., Bennett Development’s independent directors were notified.

External forensic accountants were retained.

Preservation notices went out.

Martin Shaw’s access to company systems was suspended.

Daniel also contacted the trustee administering Lily’s trust.

A temporary restriction was placed on nonroutine changes pending review.

My daughter’s money had already been safe.

Now the paperwork around it was protected too.

That mattered more to me than Bennett Development.

Vanessa arrived at my house shortly before eleven.

I didn’t want her inside.

She stood on the porch without arguing.

“I came to apologize.”

“Not tonight.”

“I need to.”

“No. You need to accept that I decide when you get access to me and Lily.”

Her eyes filled.

She nodded.

That was the first boundary she respected.

Then she handed me a folder.

“What is it?”

“Everything Martin gave me when he created Bennett Family Capital.”

I took it.

“You kept copies?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Laura told me never to throw away anything Martin touched.”

That was useful.

Vanessa turned to leave.

I stopped her.

“Why did you tell Lily she didn’t belong at the wedding?”

Her shoulders tightened.

“I was jealous.”

“Of a baby?”

“Of what she represented.”

There it was again.

Vanessa admitted she had spent two years convincing herself Daniel’s first family prevented him from fully choosing her.

She resented my calls.

Lily’s photographs.

Custody weekends.

The trust.

The fact that Daniel would always have obligations that existed before Vanessa.

“That makes what you did understandable,” I said.

Hope flickered across her face.

I finished.

“Not acceptable.”

The hope died.

“You hurt my child. Whatever happens with Martin doesn’t erase that.”

“I know.”

I wasn’t sure she did.

But she left without defending herself.

At midnight, Rachel called.

The documents Vanessa provided contained something new.

Martin’s original instructions for Bennett Family Capital.

One email stated the LLC would receive “temporary estate equalization funds.”

Vanessa had asked what that meant.

Martin replied:

DANIEL HAS APPROVED THE STRUCTURE.

A lie.

But the email had been copied to another address.

Melissa Grant.

Daniel called Melissa again.

This time she answered.

“I can’t talk long.”

“Were you working with Martin?”

“No.”

“Then why were you copied?”

“Because he wanted me to believe you approved it too.”

Daniel looked at me.

“Where are you?”

Melissa started crying.

“He knows where my mother lives.”

“Who?”

“Martin.”

Then she whispered the first thing that directly connected him to Laura’s missing evidence.

“He took Laura’s phone the night she died.”
