Chapter 10 - The Medical Bag

Caleb Sloan was found at a motel outside Bridgeport.

He surrendered without resistance.

Inside his car, investigators recovered the medical bag.

The deed was not there.

Caleb said Agnes ordered him to hide it beneath the ballroom stage.

When he returned, it was gone.

“Who knew?” police asked.

“Mrs. Mercer. Mr. Sloan. And the doctor.”

The physician who forged Evelyn’s diagnosis had remained near the stage during the party.

He was arrested attempting to cross into Canada.

Inside his luggage was a sealed plastic envelope containing the deed confirmation.

He claimed Edward gave it to him for safekeeping.

The original document proved the transfer was permanent.

Thomas had purchased the mortgage lawfully after Agnes signed a voluntary surrender agreement.

Her signature was witnessed and notarized.

The mansion belonged to the trust.

Agnes’s challenge collapsed.

But the recovered medical bag contained something else.

Lily’s prescribed antibiotics.

Evelyn stared at the bottle.

The medication had been filled earlier that day after a telehealth consultation.

She had placed it in the bag before trying to leave.

Agnes took the bag.

She knew Lily had medication inside.

Yet she ordered it removed from Evelyn’s reach.

The prosecutor reviewed the ballroom footage.

Agnes handed the bag to Caleb while Lily lay against Evelyn’s shoulder.

Julian watched.

He may not have known about the hidden deed.

But he knew the medicine was inside.

Evelyn confronted him during a recorded legal interview.

“You watched your mother take Lily’s antibiotics.”

Julian looked down.

“I thought you were exaggerating.”

“You saw the label.”

“I thought one delayed dose would not matter.”

“Our daughter developed sepsis.”

His face broke.

“I didn’t know.”

“You didn’t want to know.”

That distinction ended something in him.

Julian agreed to cooperate against Agnes and Edward.

Not to save the marriage.

That possibility no longer existed.

To prevent his daughter from one day learning he had protected his pride more fiercely than her life.

The charges expanded.

Agnes now faced child endangerment in addition to fraud and conspiracy.

Julian faced assault, coercive control, and reckless endangerment.

Then investigators found one final recording from the ballroom.

Agnes had whispered to Edward:

“If the child gets worse, Evelyn will look unstable.”

👉 Lily’s medical emergency had not merely been ignored—Agnes intended to use it as evidence against her mother.
