Chapter 13 - Julian’s Last Request
Before reporting to prison, Julian requested one supervised visit with Lily.
Evelyn hesitated.
Lily had begun asking why her father no longer lived with them.
A child therapist helped Evelyn prepare.
The visit took place in a neutral family center.
Julian arrived without gifts.
Evelyn had forbidden them.
He sat across from Lily.
She held the pink blanket even though her fever was long gone.
“Daddy, why did you hit Mommy?”
Julian’s face collapsed.
He looked toward Evelyn.
She did not rescue him.
“Because I was angry and made a terrible choice.”
“Did Mommy make you?”
“No.”
“Did Grandma Agnes?”
“No.”
Lily thought for a moment.
“Are you sorry?”
“Yes.”
“Then why can’t you come home?”
Julian swallowed.
“Because being sorry does not erase what I did.”
Evelyn’s eyes filled.
It was the first fully honest thing he had said to their daughter.
Lily asked whether he still loved her.
“Yes.”
“Then you should have let Mommy take me to the doctor.”
Julian lowered his head.
“You’re right.”
The visit ended after twenty minutes.
Outside, Julian asked Evelyn for one final conversation.
“I know I cannot ask you to wait.”
“No.”
“I know I cannot ask for forgiveness.”
“No.”
He nodded.
“What will you do with the mansion?”
“I’m transferring it.”
“To whom?”
“Not you.”
He almost smiled.
“I deserved that.”
Evelyn did not smile back.
“The building will become a family medical and legal center.”
Julian looked surprised.
Evelyn planned to create emergency housing for parents escaping coercive homes, with pediatric care available on site.
The ballroom would become a child wellness clinic.
The library would become a legal aid office.
The grand foyer would remain open.
No doors would block a parent from seeking help.
Julian looked toward the road.
“My mother will hate that.”
“Your mother no longer gets a vote.”
He accepted it.
Then he handed Evelyn his wedding ring.
She refused to take it.
“That belongs to your choices, not mine.”
Julian placed it in his pocket.
