Chapter 5 - The Guests Who Said Nothing
By morning, Lily’s fever began to fall.
Doctors expected a full recovery.
Evelyn finally allowed herself to cry.
Not for Julian.
Not for the mansion.
For the terrifying possibility that her daughter might have died while adults stood beneath a chandelier pretending not to see her.
Police took Evelyn’s full statement.
The security footage showed Julian blocking the doors.
Agnes taking the medical bag.
Julian slapping Evelyn while she held Lily.
The guests remained visible in the background.
No one intervened.
One guest claimed he believed the argument was staged.
Another said he did not want to interfere in a marriage.
The waiter gave the clearest statement.
“Mrs. Mercer kept saying the child needed a hospital. Mr. Mercer kept talking about investors.”
His words spread through the ballroom guest list.
Several investors quietly contacted attorneys.
They wanted to know whether their money had been placed with a man who refused medical care to his child.
Julian arrived at the hospital with flowers.
Security stopped him at the entrance.
He called Evelyn repeatedly.
She answered once.
“Lily is recovering.”
“Thank God.”
“You prevented me from taking her.”
“I made a mistake.”
“You hit me.”
“You were leaving in the middle of my event.”
“Our daughter could have died.”
His voice lowered.
“You activated something without knowing what it was.”
Evelyn looked at the red folder.
“I knew enough.”
“You embarrassed me in front of everyone.”
Even now, he cared about the guests.
Not Lily’s infection.
Not Evelyn’s split lip.
His reputation.
“I’m filing for protection,” Evelyn said.
Julian’s tone changed.
“Do that and my mother will destroy you.”
Evelyn almost smiled.
“Your mother no longer controls the house.”
Silence.
Then Julian whispered, “What did your father buy?”
Evelyn ended the call.
Minutes later, Arthur received notice that Agnes had attempted to transfer several mansion accounts and empty two investment funds.
The trust protections blocked both attempts.
Agnes then ordered estate staff to remove Evelyn’s belongings.
The estate manager refused.
The trust had changed the access codes.
The Mercer family was still inside the mansion.
