Chapter 6 - The Key Beneath the Staircase
Three days later, Lily left the hospital.
Evelyn did not return to Julian.
She and Lily stayed at a quiet guesthouse owned by Thomas’s trust.
Arthur accompanied Evelyn back to the Mercer mansion only to retrieve medical records and open the archive.
Police and private security were present.
Julian stood at the top of the marble staircase.
Agnes waited beside him in a silver robe.
“You brought guards into our home,” she said.
Evelyn held up the brass key.
“This is not your home.”
Agnes laughed.
Then Arthur presented the trust certificate.
The mansion belonged to Vale-Mercer Preservation Trust.
Evelyn was now its sole emergency trustee.
Julian read the document twice.
“You lied to me.”
“No,” Evelyn said. “You never asked who paid the mortgage.”
Agnes gripped the banister.
“My husband built this house.”
“Your husband borrowed against it until the bank prepared to seize it.”
“That is private.”
“It stopped being private when trust funds rescued it.”
The brass key opened a hidden door beneath the staircase.
Behind it, a narrow corridor led to an underground records room.
Julian tried to follow.
Security stopped him.
“You cannot lock me out of my own family archive.”
Arthur looked at him.
“The records were installed by Mr. Vale after discovering unexplained transfers tied to the property.”
Inside the archive were sealed storage boxes, encrypted drives, old ledgers, and copies of correspondence Agnes believed had been destroyed.
Thomas had collected them through lawful trust oversight.
The records showed that Agnes diverted money from family foundations into private accounts.
Julian’s company then used those accounts as collateral for investment projects.
The investor party had been designed to bring in enough new money to cover older losses.
A financial chain dependent on silence.
Evelyn found a folder labeled with Lily’s name.
Her hands went cold.
Inside was a proposed trust amendment.
It would place Lily’s future inheritance under Agnes’s control if Evelyn were declared mentally unfit.
The signature page contained a version of Evelyn’s name.
She had never signed it.
Arthur examined the ink.
“Forgery.”
Then Evelyn found a medical statement claiming she suffered postpartum psychosis.
