Chapter 7 - The Mother-in-Law’s Plan
Agnes denied forging the trust amendment.
She blamed Julian’s corporate attorney.
The attorney denied preparing it.
Metadata from the archive linked the file to Agnes’s personal assistant.
The assistant agreed to cooperate.
She revealed that Agnes had been building a case against Evelyn for more than a year.
Every disagreement became evidence.
Every time Evelyn cried became “instability.”
Every request for privacy became “paranoia.”
Agnes instructed household staff to document Evelyn’s moods.
Most reports were exaggerated.
Some were invented.
The objective was clear.
If Evelyn left Julian, Agnes would argue she was mentally unfit and seek control over Lily’s trust.
Julian claimed he knew nothing.
Evelyn confronted him in the library while attorneys remained present.
“Did you know your mother planned to take Lily?”
“No.”
“Did you know she collected false reports about me?”
“She said she was protecting the family.”
“From what?”
“From you leaving.”
Evelyn stared at him.
“You knew.”
“Not about the forged documents.”
“You knew she was creating a file.”
Julian sat down.
His authority seemed smaller outside the ballroom.
“I thought it would persuade you to stay.”
“You threatened my motherhood to keep me in a marriage.”
“I was afraid of losing Lily.”
“You almost let her die because an investor party mattered more.”
His face crumpled.
For one second, Evelyn saw genuine horror.
Then he said, “We can fix this.”
And she understood he still believed the marriage was a damaged possession.
Not a choice she could withdraw.
Arthur entered carrying another ledger.
It showed payments to a physician who signed the false mental-health statement.
The physician had also attended the investor party.
He stood in the ballroom while Lily weakened.
He knew Agnes’s plan.
He said nothing.
Police interviewed him that evening.
He admitted Agnes paid him to create a diagnosis without examining Evelyn.
In exchange, Julian’s company directed investment business to his private clinic.
Julian denied approving the arrangement.
But his signature appeared on the contract.
When shown the document, he stared at it.
“That isn’t my signature.”
