Chapter 3 - The Red Folder
The ambulance arrived within minutes.
Evelyn rode with Lily.
Julian attempted to follow, but the paramedics blocked him until police recorded what had happened in the foyer.
Several guests had filmed the slap.
The waiter confirmed Lily had appeared dangerously ill.
The attorney preserved the ballroom security footage before anyone could erase it.
Agnes demanded the red folder.
“This belongs to the Mercer family.”
The attorney placed it inside his portfolio.
“It was delivered to Mrs. Mercer.”
“She is leaving the family.”
“That has not been legally determined.”
Julian stared toward the ambulance disappearing through the gates.
“What is inside it?”
The attorney did not answer.
At Fremont Children’s Hospital, doctors diagnosed Lily with a severe kidney infection that had spread into her bloodstream.
The physician spoke carefully.
“She is responding to treatment, but she should have been brought in earlier.”
Evelyn sat beside the hospital bed, holding Lily’s small hand.
Guilt pressed against her chest.
She had tried to leave.
She should have fought harder.
A nurse cleaned the split in Evelyn’s lip.
“You should be examined too.”
“I’m fine.”
“You were assaulted.”
Evelyn looked through the glass wall at the police officer waiting outside.
“I know.”
Near midnight, the attorney arrived.
His name was Arthur Blake.
He placed the sealed red folder on the small hospital table.
“Your father instructed me to bring this only after you used the activation phrase.”
Evelyn looked at Lily.
“I hoped I would never need it.”
Arthur nodded.
“So did he.”
Evelyn broke the seal.
Inside were no dramatic stacks of cash.
No readable deed.
Only a key, several legal instruments, and a letter written in her father’s hand.
The first line made her close her eyes.
Evelyn, if Julian has struck you, threatened Lily, or attempted to force you from the Mercer residence, then the trust protections have failed and emergency control has passed to you.
Arthur explained that the Mercer mansion did not belong to Julian.
It did not belong to Agnes either.
It was owned by a private trust funded years earlier by Evelyn’s father.
Julian had been allowed to believe his family still controlled it.
The illusion was deliberate.
Her father wanted to see what Julian would do when he believed Evelyn had no power.
The key opened a private archive beneath the mansion.
