Chapter 11 - LUKE’S MOTHER
Police located Luke through a call to Margaret.
The conversation was recorded.
She told him the woman he called Aunt Eleanor was his biological mother.
That made the first Caroline and me his cousins.
Luke was horrified for exactly three seconds.
Then he blamed us.
“You knew.”
We did not.
Margaret had hidden the truth to preserve the trust line.
Luke’s identity had been built on fraud too.
But unlike the women, he responded by choosing violence.
He kidnapped Margaret from a roadside motel.
He demanded the original ledger in exchange for her life.
Police already had it.
Margaret realized her son no longer needed her.
For the first time, fear entered her voice.
Luke called me.
“Bring the folder.”
“What folder?”
“The medical folder from the house.”
“It’s evidence.”
“Then bring evidence.”
He sent a video of Margaret tied to a chair.
I felt no loyalty to her.
But I would not let Luke control another life through me.
Police arranged a controlled exchange.
Luke appeared at an abandoned church.
Margaret sat near the altar.
Michael carried a decoy folder.
I remained in the command vehicle.
Luke saw the trap.
He fired.
No one was hit.
Then Margaret cut her own restraints with a blade hidden in her sleeve and ran toward the rear exit.
Luke followed.
Both disappeared into the cemetery behind the church.
Police found Margaret wounded.
Luke escaped.
She whispered one location before losing consciousness.
