Chapter 12 - THE DELIVERY HOUSE

The delivery house stood on private land outside the city.

It looked like a luxury retreat.

Inside was a surgical room.

Infant warmer.

Forged death certificates.

Adoption paperwork.

Margaret had planned every pregnancy outcome there.

If a mother survived, she was declared unstable.

If she died, the death became accidental.

If the child fit the trust, he stayed.

If not, records vanished.

Claire Dawson’s labor began while police searched the property.

She had been hiding in an upstairs bedroom.

Doctors rushed her to a real hospital.

She delivered a boy safely.

Luke’s biological son.

Claire named him Samuel Dawson.

She refused the Brooks name.

The trust could not assign ownership.

Then my contractions began.

The burns and trauma triggered labor.

At thirty-four weeks, my son was born by emergency cesarean under independent protection.

Small.

Alive.

I named him Noah Caroline Reed.

Caroline for the sister who survived.

Reed for the man whose genetic material had been stolen but who never claimed ownership.

Michael stood outside the nursery glass.

He did not ask to hold Noah.

He waited until I invited him.
