Chapter 6 - THE TWO HEIRS

Margaret took Eli to the abandoned Brooks textile mill.

The trust had been created there generations earlier.

Its final clause required both surviving male heirs to be physically identified at the original property before control transferred.

Margaret intended to present Eli and my unborn son together.

That meant she needed me alive long enough to deliver.

Luke wanted me dead.

Mother and son no longer wanted the same outcome.

Police recovered messages showing Margaret had ordered Luke to stop the assault before the burns became fatal.

Luke ignored her.

He had lost control.

That fracture became our opening.

Michael volunteered to enter the mill wearing a wire.

Authorities refused a private rescue and built a controlled operation.

I remained in the hospital.

Eli was recovered alive from an office above the factory floor.

Margaret escaped through a tunnel.

Luke was not there.

Then investigators found a hidden bedroom inside the mill.

A woman had lived there recently.

Her medical records used my name.

Caroline Brooks.

A third woman.

Age thirty.

Eight months pregnant.

Same due date as mine.
