Chapter 15 - THE VOICE WITHOUT A FACE

Independent testing had matched Michael to the stored genetic sample.

But the new page showed the sample itself had been mislabeled decades earlier.

The true paternal donor for Eli and Noah might be another man.

Michael stared at the report.

“I never knew.”

I believed him.

Then the first Caroline remembered something from the night of her attack.

A man pounded on the same front door.

Deep voice.

Angry.

Luke went pale.

The man never entered because Margaret moved Caroline through the garage before he broke in.

The scene had happened before.

Same kitchen.

Same violence.

Same mysterious voice.

Michael had not known where she lived then.

He could not have been the first man outside.

The leather folder contained an audio file.

We played it.

BANG. BANG. BANG.

“LUKE! OPEN THE DOOR NOW!”

The voice matched the man who rescued me.

But not Michael.

The first Caroline covered her mouth.

“That’s him.”

Dr. Hart searched old clinic records.

One physician had used the Reed donor identity before Michael.

Dr. Jonathan Vale.

A fertility specialist who disappeared after reporting unauthorized embryo use.

Officially dead.

No body recovered.

Jonathan might have been the biological father of both boys.

He might have followed Luke for years.

He might have broken into my house to save me.

But why hide his face?

The final page answered part of it.

JONATHAN VALE — BROOKS TRUST ENFORCEMENT OFFICER.

He had once worked for Margaret.

Not against her.

His job was to protect viable heirs.

He did not come because I was being hurt.

He came because Noah was valuable.

The rescue might still have saved my life.

The motive changed everything.

Then a security camera from across the street surfaced.

The man entered my house after breaking the door.

He knelt beside me.

He left before police arrived.

For one second, he turned toward the camera.

His face was visible.

Luke’s face.

Older by twenty years.

Another Brooks son.

Another identity.

Another man raised inside the trust.

The system had created replacement Lukes just as it created replacement Carolines.

One violent.

One protective.

Both shaped to preserve the heir.

The man’s name was Nathan Brooks.

Luke’s older half brother.

Margaret declared him dead as a child after he resisted the family.

He survived under Jonathan Vale’s identity.

He watched the first Caroline’s marriage collapse.

He tried to save her too late.

Then he watched mine.

This time, he broke the door.

He sent the folder.

He exposed the trust.

But he never revealed himself because he had committed crimes while working for Margaret years earlier.

He was both rescuer and participant.

Alive somewhere.

Then Noah’s first birthday arrived.

A package appeared without a return address.

Inside was the broken deadbolt from the house.

A note read:

NO DOOR SHOULD EVER CLOSE ON HER AGAIN.

Beneath it lay a photograph.

Nathan Brooks standing beside Margaret outside the delivery house.

Recent.

Taken after her imprisonment.

Margaret looked free.

The prison confirmed she remained in custody.

The woman in the photograph was not Margaret.

Another replacement.

The network had survived.

The first Caroline, Claire, Michael, Dr. Hart, and I met with federal investigators.

We shared every record.

No secret rescue.

No private bargain.

No single hero.

Then my phone rang.

A deep male voice spoke.

“Caroline.”

“Who are you?”

“You already know what I did.”

“Why did you save me?”

A long pause.

“Because I failed the first time.”

“Where are you?”

“Watching the next house.”

My blood turned cold.

“What next house?”

He sent a live video.

A luxurious suburban living room.

Bright daylight.

Broken dishes.

An overturned pot.

A pregnant woman in a champagne dress crawling toward a locked front door.

A man in a white shirt dragging her backward.

The same scene.

Another family.

Another Caroline.

The voice said:

“Luke was never the only one trained to do this.”

I heard pounding through the phone.

BANG.

BANG.

BANG.

The man on the line whispered:

“This time, you decide whether I open the door.”

I looked at Noah sleeping beside me.

At the scars on my arms.

At the life that existed because someone broke through.

Then I answered:

“Call the police. Preserve the evidence. And break it down.”

The live video shook.

The door splintered.

The pregnant woman looked up.

For one second, her face filled the screen.

My face.

Not similar.

Exact.

She whispered:

“Caroline?”

Behind her, the attacker turned.

Luke’s face.

Young.

Unscarred.

The man on the phone inhaled sharply.

“That house was built before yours.”

The video widened.

Rows of identical homes stretched behind it.

Each with a locked door.

Each with a boiling pot.

Each with a pregnant woman waiting for someone to hear her.

May you like

The line went silent.

Then every door began pounding from the inside.
