Chapter 5 - THE BOY NAMED ELI
His name was Eli Hart.
Dr. Evelyn Hart was his legal guardian.
His biological mother was the first Caroline.
She delivered him prematurely after one of Luke’s assaults.
Margaret declared him dead.
Dr. Hart smuggled him out of the hospital and placed him under protection.
Eli survived.
For six years, Dr. Hart hid him while collecting evidence.
The unidentified man outside my door was Eli’s biological father.
Not Luke.
The first Caroline had become pregnant through a stored embryo created before her marriage.
The paternal donor was a man named Michael Reed.
The stranger.
Luke learned the truth after the birth and tried to kill both mother and child.
Michael believed Eli died until Dr. Hart contacted him months earlier.
He came to the house to expose Luke and protect the second heir—my son.
Then Dr. Hart revealed another fact.
My pregnancy had also been created through stored genetic material.
Luke was not the father.
Michael Reed was.
I stared at her.
“That’s impossible.”
My fertility clinic records showed an embryo transfer performed while I was sedated for a procedure Luke called scar removal.
My egg.
Michael’s stored sample.
No consent from either of us.
The trust required children from the maternal Brooks line and an approved Reed donor line.
Margaret created heirs like financial instruments.
Luke believed the babies were his until genetic screening proved otherwise.
That was when the beatings grew worse.
He was not trying to force a son from me.
He was trying to destroy sons who would never be his.
Then Michael entered the hospital room.
For the first time, I saw his full face.
He did not ask to touch my belly.
He did not call the baby his.
He only said:
“I’m sorry my name was used against you.”
Before I could answer, officers rushed in.
Eli had been taken from Dr. Hart’s protected home.
