Chapter 9 - THE EMPTY GRAVE

The cemetery opened the grave under court order.
The coffin contained no body.
Only medical records, photographs, and a video camera sealed in plastic.
The first Caroline’s remains had never been buried there.
Margaret cremated an unidentified woman and used the ashes as proof.
The video showed the first Caroline alive after the supposed kitchen accident.
She had escaped.
Dr. Hart helped her leave under a new identity.
Then she disappeared again while trying to recover Eli.
Michael watched the footage with tears in his eyes.
She told the camera:
“If Luke finds me, he will finish what he started.”
The final recording was made five years earlier.
She was alive then.
A database search identified a woman using the name Anna Reed in Oregon.
Police located her.
The first Caroline was alive.
She had spent seven years believing Eli died.
Her reunion with him was gradual, private, and protected.
No instant motherhood.
No forced embrace.
Then she asked to see me.
Two sisters.
Same face.
Same scars in different places.
She looked at my bandages and whispered:
“He did it again.”
She carried one final piece of evidence.
Luke’s confession from the night he attacked her.
