Chapter 1 - The Chain Around My Daughter’s Ankle

My mother was throwing another armful of laundry into the basket when I opened the front door and saw the metal chain locked around my eight-year-old daughter’s ankle.

Sophie stood in the entryway in her pastel hoodie, blue jeans, and sneakers, both arms trembling beneath a basket so overloaded with clothes that she could barely see over the top.

“If you drop that basket, you’re sleeping outside!” Margaret snapped.

Then my mother turned away.

She made it three steps toward the living room before my handbag slipped from my shoulder and hit the hardwood floor.

“Sophie?”

My daughter’s head jerked toward me.

Her cheeks were wet.

The instant she saw me, whatever strength had been keeping her upright disappeared.

The basket tilted.

I caught it before it crushed her foot and shoved it onto the floor.

Then I saw the chain properly.

Heavy steel links wrapped around Sophie’s ankle and ran to the wooden staircase post beside her.

My stomach went cold.

“Sophie... who chained you up?”

She pointed toward Margaret.

“She said I’m not her real granddaughter,” Sophie sobbed. “So I have to work.”

Margaret turned around.

Instead of shame, I saw irritation.

She strode back toward us in her patterned knit vest and beige top, as if I were the one creating a scene in her house.

I dropped to my knees.

The metal had rubbed Sophie’s ankle raw.

There was a small brass padlock attached to the chain.

I looked up.

“Key.”

Margaret folded her arms.

“She needs discipline.”

“Give me the key.”

“She needs to understand that people who live under my roof contribute.”

“She’s eight.”

“And spoiled.”

I stood so fast my knee struck the staircase.

“Give me the damn key.”

That was when Rachel appeared in the hallway.

My older sister wore a dark blue shirt and black trousers. Behind her, Chloe and Madison stood near the living-room doorway.

Chloe’s face had gone white.

Madison wouldn’t look at me.

Margaret reached into her pocket and tossed the key.

It landed near my shoe.

I unlocked Sophie immediately.

The moment the chain opened, she wrapped both arms around my waist.

Margaret pointed straight at her.

“She’s nothing but a bastard child you brought into this house.”

Something inside me broke.

I moved Sophie behind me.

Then I crossed the space between my mother and me and slapped her.

The sound cracked through the entryway.

Margaret stumbled backward two steps and caught the stair railing.

Rachel gasped.

Chloe covered her mouth.

Madison started crying.

I didn’t apologize.

I grabbed my black handbag from the floor, ripped open the zipper, and pulled out the envelope I had been carrying since leaving the laboratory that morning.

“Look at whose name is on this DNA report.”

I threw the pages toward Margaret.

They struck her chest and scattered across the floor.

For the first time, she stopped looking angry.

Her eyes moved across the laboratory seal.

Then Sophie’s name.

Then her own.

Confusion flickered across her face.

And, for one brief second, something that looked almost like remorse.

Rachel moved faster than anyone else.

She bent down, snatched the first page from the floor, and stared at it.

Her expression changed.

Not confusion.

Fear.

I saw her thumb fold over the bottom corner where the laboratory case number was printed.

Then she looked at Margaret.

“Mom,” Rachel said quietly, “don’t say anything.”

I turned toward her.

“Why?”

Rachel tightened her grip on the report.

And suddenly I understood that the chain around Sophie’s ankle was not the beginning of what had happened in this house.

It was the result of something that had already been set in motion.
