Chapter 5 - The Locked Study

“How did you get my laboratory envelope?”
Rachel’s face didn’t move.
“I didn’t.”
“I saw it.”
“You saw a thumbnail for half a second.”
“It had the GeneSure logo.”
“So?”
“My report came from GeneSure.”
“So do thousands of tests.”
“The envelope in your hand had my name printed across the front.”
Rachel looked at Margaret.
Not me.
That told me enough.
I stepped toward the study.
Margaret blocked the hallway.
“You’re done.”
“No.”
“You hit me in my own home.”
“You chained my child in your own home.”
Sophie flinched.
I immediately lowered my voice.
I hated that she was still hearing this.
I walked back to her.
“Sophie, get your shoes.”
She looked down.
“I’m wearing them.”
My throat tightened.
Of course she was.
Margaret had chained her while she was fully dressed, as though she might run.
“Grab your backpack.”
Rachel spoke.
“You can leave, but you’re not taking anything from the study.”
I faced her.
“Anything?”
Rachel realized the wording too late.
“What exactly belongs to me in there?”
“Nothing.”
“Then why say it?”
Margaret moved toward the study door and locked it.
The click was quiet.
It still sounded like a confession.
Chloe was staring at her mother.
“Why did you delete my video?”
Rachel ignored her.
“Mom?”
“Go upstairs.”
“No.”
Rachel’s face reddened.
“Chloe.”
“I saw you.”
Rachel took a step toward her.
Madison grabbed Chloe’s arm.
I moved between them again.
“Leave her alone.”
Rachel pointed at me.
“You don’t tell me how to raise my children.”
“No. But after what happened to Sophie, I’m paying attention.”
Margaret scoffed.
“She got chores.”
“She got chained.”
“You keep using that word like I hung her from the ceiling.”
My hands curled.
I forced them open.
I had already slapped my mother once.
Rachel could use that.
I was beginning to understand that she wanted me angry.
She wanted me impulsive.
She wanted witnesses to remember my reaction instead of what caused it.
So I stepped back.
I took photographs of the chain.
The padlock.
Sophie’s ankle.
The scattered laundry.
Margaret’s eyes followed my phone.
“You think pictures make you right?”
“No. They make it harder for you to rewrite this later.”
Rachel went still.
That sentence landed.
Sophie returned with her backpack.
I helped her put it on.
Then I noticed a manila envelope on the lower shelf of the console.
My name was written across it.
Emily Parker.
Rachel saw me reach.
She snatched it first.
“What is that?”
“Mail.”
“For me.”
“It came to Mom’s house.”
“With my name.”
I held out my hand.
Rachel tore the envelope in half.
Chloe gasped.
Inside was not a letter.
It was a photocopy of a signed form.
Only the upper section survived the tear.
TEMPORARY MINOR GUARDIANSHIP AUTHORIZATION.
Child: Sophie Parker.
Proposed guardian: Margaret Parker.
I looked at my mother.
She didn’t look surprised.
I looked at Rachel.
“You prepared guardianship papers?”
Rachel’s voice stayed calm.
“In case you became unstable.”
I laughed once.
It sounded nothing like humor.
“You chained my daughter and prepared papers saying I’m unstable?”
Margaret said, “You just assaulted a sixty-four-year-old woman.”
There it was.
The trap.
The slap had not created their plan.
But it had given them something useful.
I looked at the torn guardianship form again.
A signature line appeared near the bottom of the surviving page.
My name had already been typed beneath it.
Then Madison whispered from behind Chloe.
“Aunt Emily.”
She opened her hand.
A small silver key rested on her palm.
“I took this from Mom’s bag.”
Rachel’s face went blank.
Madison pointed toward the locked study.
