Chapter 3 - The Family Lineage Review

I pulled my arm from Margaret’s hand.

“What does that mean?”

Rachel looked at my mother as if she had already said too much.

Margaret recovered first.

“It means you should take Sophie and leave.”

I stared at her.

“You chain my daughter, accuse her of not being family, and now you want us gone before I can see the document that supposedly proves it?”

“Yes.”

At least she was no longer pretending.

Sophie’s hand slipped into mine.

I looked down at her.

“Go sit with Chloe and Madison.”

“I want to stay with you.”

“I know.”

Her voice dropped.

“Don’t leave me.”

The words hit harder than the slap I had given Margaret.

I crouched and touched Sophie’s face.

“I’m not leaving you anywhere. Sit on the sofa where I can see you.”

Chloe took Sophie’s hand.

Madison followed them.

Rachel watched her daughters move away and looked furious that they had obeyed me.

I turned back.

“Open the study.”

Margaret shook her head.

I pulled out my phone.

“I have photographs of Sophie’s ankle. I have the chain. I have three children who witnessed what happened.”

Rachel’s expression changed.

“Are you threatening Mom?”

“I’m telling you I’m done being managed.”

Margaret folded her arms.

“You always were dramatic.”

I looked down at the chain lying on the hardwood.

“No. I just finally have something too ugly to excuse.”

Rachel stepped closer.

“Emily, take Sophie home.”

“This has been my home for six weeks.”

“Temporarily.”

“Because Mom asked us to stay while my apartment building was being repaired.”

Margaret said nothing.

That silence mattered.

She had invited us here.

Now suddenly she wanted us gone.

I looked toward the study.

“What changed?”

No one answered.

Then I noticed a sheet of paper sticking from beneath a leather folder on the console table.

Rachel saw me notice it.

She moved.

I got there first.

The heading read:

PARKER FAMILY LINEAGE ELIGIBILITY REVIEW.

My mouth went dry.

Below it was my full legal name.

Emily Anne Parker.

Status: Biological relationship disputed.

Requested by: Rachel Parker.

I looked up.

“You requested this?”

Rachel’s shoulders stiffened.

“It was necessary.”

“For what?”

Margaret reached for the page.

I pulled it away.

“Necessary for what?”

Rachel finally exhaled.

“Dad’s trust.”

My father had been dead for three years.

His estate had been administered quietly.

At least, that was what I had been told.

“What trust?”

Margaret’s face turned cold.

“Your father left instructions.”

“What instructions?”

“That certain family assets stay with biological descendants.”

I looked toward Sophie.

She sat between Chloe and Madison, still trembling.

“And you decided I wasn’t one?”

Rachel pointed at the page.

“The hospital record raised a question.”

“What hospital record?”

“A delivery file from when you were born.”

“Why were you searching records from thirty-four years ago?”

Rachel hesitated.

There it was.

The question she had not prepared for.

I stepped closer.

“What happened recently that made you search?”

Margaret said, “Nothing.”

Rachel said, “The trust administrator asked.”

They spoke at the same time.

I looked from one to the other.

“Which is it?”

Neither answered.

I lowered my eyes to the bottom of the page.

There was a date.

Nine days earlier.

And beneath that date was a second line.

Review initiated following beneficiary distribution event.

“What distribution event?”

Rachel grabbed the document.

This time she tore it from my hand.

“You don’t understand any of this.”

“Then explain it.”

“You walked away from this family years ago.”

“I live fifteen minutes away.”

“You know what I mean.”

“No, Rachel. I don’t.”

Her face tightened.

Then Chloe called from the sofa.

“Mom?”

Rachel snapped around.

“What?”

Chloe was holding something behind her back.

Her phone.

And she was staring at me, not Rachel.

“Aunt Emily,” she said carefully, “I recorded something this morning.”
