Chapter 13 - The Voice Memo

I clicked the audio file.

Margaret lunged for the mouse.

I caught her wrist.

“Don’t.”

“Turn it off.”

“No.”

Rachel stepped backward.

Chloe pulled Madison and Sophie away from the desk.

The recording began with static.

Then my father’s voice filled the room.

I stopped breathing.

It was not a memory.

It was him.

Recorded.

Clear.

Legal.

Calm.

“If Margaret is listening to this, then the audit provisions have probably become necessary.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

Rachel whispered, “Mom...”

My father continued.

“The custodial accounts are not household funds. They are not reimbursement accounts. They belong to the girls.”

I looked at Sophie.

Her eyes were wide.

The recording continued.

“Emily and Rachel are to receive full transaction histories if any distribution occurs before the girls reach adulthood.”

Margaret moved toward the computer again.

I blocked her.

Then my father said something that changed Rachel’s face.

“If a biological eligibility dispute is introduced after my death, no beneficiary is to be removed without independent testing from an accredited laboratory chosen by the administrator.”

I held up my GeneSure report.

Accredited.

Independent.

Margaret’s home kit meant nothing.

Rachel sat down slowly.

“You told me the home test was enough.”

Margaret snapped, “Be quiet.”

The recording continued.

“If anyone attempts to alter custodial control using guardianship documents, all accounts are to be frozen pending review.”

I looked at the pending transfer that had already left Sophie’s account.

Rachel suddenly understood the danger.

“The audit will see it.”

“Yes,” I said.

Her eyes moved toward Margaret.

“You knew.”

Margaret’s face became hard.

Rachel stood.

“You knew the transfers would trigger a freeze.”

“They haven’t.”

“They will next week.”

Margaret did not answer.

My father’s recording ended.

For several seconds nobody moved.

Then Rachel walked toward the desk drawer.

Margaret blocked her.

“Move.”

“No.”

Rachel shoved past.

She pulled open a lower drawer.

A stack of bank statements appeared.

Margaret grabbed them.

Rachel grabbed back.

Pages scattered.

I saw account numbers.

Transfer confirmations.

A property agreement.

Then one page landed faceup near my shoe.

SALE AUTHORIZATION—PARKER RESIDENCE.

I picked it up.

The house was under contract.

Closing date:

August 29.

Two weeks away.

Seller authorization required signatures from Margaret, Rachel, and me because the trust still held title.

My signature appeared on the page.

Again.

Forged.

I looked at Margaret.

“You’re selling the house.”

She said nothing.

Rachel stopped fighting.

“What?”

Margaret turned toward her.

Rachel stared at the contract.

“You told me the buyer was just making an offer.”

“It is handled.”

“You forged Emily’s signature on a sale?”

“She was going to refuse.”

“Yes,” I said. “I would.”

Margaret looked at me with open contempt.

“This house is wasting money.”

“It belongs to the trust.”

“I have lived here thirty-eight years.”

“So you decided that made it yours?”

“I decided I was done asking permission from children.”

Rachel looked stunned.

“Where is the sale money going?”

Margaret said nothing.

Rachel stepped closer.

“Mom.”

Still nothing.

Rachel grabbed another bank statement.

Then another.

Her eyes moved rapidly.

“What is M.P. Household Management?”

Margaret’s jaw tightened.

Rachel whispered, “That isn’t a household account, is it?”

Margaret suddenly seized the entire stack of papers and ran toward the fireplace.

I realized what she was doing.

“Margaret!”

She reached for the lighter on the mantel.

I grabbed the documents.

Rachel grabbed Margaret’s arm.

The three of us struggled for half a second before I ripped the stack free.

Margaret swung toward me.

Her face was no longer confused.

No remorse.

Only rage.

“You should have taken your daughter and left when I gave you the chance.”

Behind us, Sophie screamed.

We all turned.

The front door was open.
