Chapter 14 - The Missing Chain

I ran to Sophie.
“Are you okay?”
She nodded.
“The chain was there before.”
I looked at the empty space beside the staircase.
Only a pale scratch remained where the links had dragged across the hardwood.
The padlock was gone too.
Rachel stared at Margaret.
“Did you move it?”
Margaret laughed.
“When would I have done that?”
She was right.
We had all been in the study.
I looked at Chloe.
“Did anyone leave the room?”
Chloe frowned.
“Madison went to the bathroom.”
Madison’s eyes widened.
“I didn’t take it!”
“I know.”
“Then who?”
We searched the entryway.
Closet.
Laundry room.
Kitchen.
Nothing.
I checked the front porch.
Nothing.
Then Sophie touched my arm.
“Mom.”
She pointed toward the small security keypad beside the door.
A green indicator light blinked.
Margaret saw me notice it.
“That thing barely works.”
“Does it log when the door opens?”
“No.”
Rachel answered at the same time.
“Yes.”
We all looked at her.
Margaret’s face tightened.
Rachel walked to the keypad.
“There’s a door sensor.”
She entered a code.
A small screen displayed recent activity.
Front Door Opened—5:17 p.m.
Front Door Opened—5:43 p.m.
I checked my phone.
5:43 had been during the recording in the study.
Someone had opened the door.
“Who else has a key?”
Margaret answered quickly.
“No one.”
Rachel looked at her.
“That’s a lie.”
Margaret said nothing.
Rachel continued.
“You gave a spare key to the property broker.”
My pulse jumped.
“The broker for the secret sale?”
Margaret folded her arms.
“He needed access for measurements.”
“Name.”
“No.”
“Name.”
“You don’t have authority to interrogate people.”
I raised my phone.
“I have photographs of the chain. I don’t need the physical object to remember what you did.”
For the first time since it vanished, Margaret looked disappointed.
The chain had not been removed for safety.
It had been removed because someone thought the evidence mattered.
I turned to Rachel.
“Who is the broker?”
She hesitated.
Then gave me a name.
Martin Cole.
I searched my photographs of the sale authorization.
His company appeared at the bottom.
I called.
Voicemail.
I sent an email requesting confirmation that no further access to the property occur without notice to all trust beneficiaries.
Then I copied the trust administrator.
Margaret stared at me.
“You’re making a mess.”
“No. I’m documenting yours.”
Rachel sank onto the sofa.
Her cheek was still red from Margaret’s slap.
Chloe sat beside her but did not touch her.
Madison stayed close to Sophie.
Three girls surrounded by adults who had made money more important than safety.
I hated all of us for allowing the room to become this.
I knelt in front of them.
“None of this is your job to fix.”
Chloe looked at me.
“But I have something.”
Rachel’s head lifted.
“What?”
Chloe swallowed.
“When Mom deleted my videos, she didn’t delete everything.”
Rachel stood.
“Chloe.”
Her daughter backed away.
“I sent one to myself.”
“Give me the phone.”
“No.”
Rachel stepped forward.
I blocked her.
“Let her finish.”
Chloe opened her email.
“There was another recording.”
My heart accelerated.
“The one from the study?”
Chloe shook her head.
“Earlier.”
“When?”
“Two weeks ago.”
Rachel’s face went white.
Chloe continued.
“I was looking for Grandma because Madison wanted to go home. Mom and Grandma were in the study.”
“What did you record?”
“I didn’t mean to. My phone was still recording from a video.”
She opened an attachment.
Before she could press play, Margaret spoke.
“Chloe.”
The coldness in her voice made the child freeze.
Margaret walked slowly toward her granddaughter.
“You do not understand what you are about to do.”
Chloe’s hands shook.
Rachel whispered, “Mom, stop.”
Margaret ignored her.
“You could destroy this family.”
I stood beside Chloe.
“No. Adults already did that.”
Then Sophie tugged my sleeve.
She was staring at the ring of keys Margaret had left on the console table.
One small key had a strip of red tape around it.
Sophie pointed.
“That was on the chain key ring before.”
I picked it up.
Rachel looked toward the study.
“Red tape.”
Her voice changed.
“What?”
Rachel stared at the key.
“Dad used red tape on the basement safe key.”
Margaret lunged.
I grabbed the key first.

And the instant I did, I knew whatever was inside that safe mattered more to her than the DNA report, the forged documents, or the missing chain.
