Chapter 8 - The Request Sent in My Name

I read the email twice.

Then I looked at Rachel.

“Did you send this?”

She glanced at the screen.

“No.”

Margaret said, “Maybe you forgot.”

I stared at her.

“I did not forget authorizing the woman who chained my child to collect her from school.”

Sophie moved closer to me.

Rachel folded her arms.

“Anyone could have created an email address.”

“That’s the point.”

I opened the attached authorization.

My name appeared at the bottom.

Emily Parker.

The digital signature looked like mine.

Almost.

The curve in the E was wrong.

I used the same signature every day at work.

I knew exactly how my hand moved.

“This is forged.”

Rachel shrugged.

“Prove it.”

That was the moment she stopped pretending she wanted peace.

I called the school office in front of everyone.

I asked them to freeze all pickup changes unless I appeared in person with identification.

The administrator confirmed the request had been submitted that afternoon.

I asked for the sender address.

It was emily.parker.family@a free email service.

Not mine.

Rachel listened without blinking.

When I ended the call, I photographed the authorization.

Then I forwarded everything to my real email account.

Rachel smiled faintly.

“You’re becoming paranoid.”

“Paranoid people imagine patterns.”

I pointed at the chain.

“The DNA swap.”

I pointed at the trust folder.

“The guardianship form.”

I held up my phone.

“The school request.”

Then I looked at her.

“That’s a pattern.”

Margaret stepped toward Sophie.

“Come here.”

Sophie immediately moved behind me.

Margaret’s mouth tightened.

“I’m still her grandmother.”

“She doesn’t want you touching her.”

“I fed that child.”

“You chained that child.”

“You hit me.”

“And you’re going to keep using that until everyone forgets why.”

Margaret’s expression told me I was right.

Rachel crossed her arms.

“Maybe you should worry about what witnesses will say.”

I looked toward Chloe and Madison.

Rachel continued.

“Three children saw you assault a senior citizen.”

Chloe’s face twisted.

“Mom!”

“Facts are facts.”

Madison whispered, “Grandma chained Sophie first.”

Rachel ignored her.

I finally understood why she had remained so calm after the slap.

She had a narrative ready.

Unstable Emily.

Violent Emily.

Unfit Emily.

A temporary guardianship form waiting for a signature.

A school pickup request already submitted.

This wasn’t a reaction.

It was infrastructure.

I turned to Sophie.

“We’re leaving.”

Rachel smiled.

“Good.”

“But I’m taking copies of anything with Sophie’s name on it.”

The smile vanished.

“No.”

I photographed the trust pages quickly.

Margaret tried to close the folder.

I kept shooting.

One page.

Another.

Another.

Then I reached an account summary.

SOPHIE PARKER CUSTODIAL EDUCATION SUBACCOUNT.

Initial contribution.

Annual earnings.

Current balance.

My eyes stopped.

$186,420.

Sophie had an account worth more than one hundred eighty-six thousand dollars.

I had never been told it existed.

Then I saw the transaction history.

Three withdrawals had been made during the previous year.

Total withdrawn:

$72,000.

Authorized representative:

Emily Parker.

My knees almost gave out.

“I never touched this money.”

Rachel backed toward the door.

I scrolled lower.

The destination account was listed only by entity name.

R.P. Consulting LLC.

I looked at my sister.

Rachel Parker.

R.P.

“Is that your company?”

She did not answer.

Then she ran.

Not away from the house.
