Chapter 12 - SAMUEL STOPPED APOLOGIZING

For months after the party, Samuel apologized whenever he dropped anything.
A pencil.
Fork.
Soccer ball.
“Sorry.”
Immediately.
Too immediately.
His therapist noticed.
We worked on it.
One afternoon he knocked over milk.
The glass tipped.
Milk spread across the table.
Samuel froze.
Then looked at me.
I grabbed a towel.
“Help me?”
He stared.
“That’s it?”
“That’s it.”
“I’m not in trouble?”
“For spilling milk?”
“It’s a mess.”
“Mess isn’t a moral failure.”
He smiled.
May you like
Tiny.
But I knew something had shifted.
