Chapter 10 - Vanessa Wasn’t Trying to Steal Lily’s Account

The answer surprised me.
Vanessa had never attempted to withdraw a dollar from Lily’s account.
No forged transfer.
No secret access.
No application to control it.
The major twist was more complicated.
My father had created two family investment accounts before he died.
One for Lily.
One intended for Vanessa’s future child.
Vanessa had been pregnant at the time.
She lost the baby at seventeen weeks.
Afterward, Dad changed the estate plan.
The second account was never funded.
Lily’s was.
Vanessa never told me how deeply that hurt her.
I knew about the miscarriage.
I did not know about the account.
Mom did.
Three earlier clues changed meaning immediately.
Vanessa’s obsession with Lily’s appearance.
Her resentment when strangers praised Lily.
Her comment that Lily was “basically my kid too.”
This had never been only business.
For years, Vanessa had watched my daughter receive things she associated with the child she lost.
My father’s money.
My mother’s attention.
Family photographs.
Birthdays.
Then Lily’s hair became another symbol.
Vanessa had once imagined having a little girl with long dark hair.
Mom told me that quietly.
“She used to say it during the pregnancy.”
I sat there feeling something I had not expected.
Sympathy.
Then anger at myself for feeling sympathy.
Because grief explained the wound.
It did not explain the scissors.
Vanessa had developed an ugly private belief:
Lily had received the life Vanessa’s daughter should have had.
When the salon began failing, those resentments merged with money.
She convinced herself that using Lily’s popularity was somehow fair.
After all, Lily had “everything.”
Vanessa had lost her child.
Lost money.
Risked Mom’s home.
Built a business that was collapsing.
The livestream became, in her mind, a way to take back control.
That was why she told Lily:
“Your hair is too pretty.”
It wasn’t a random cruel sentence.
It was the most childish, honest version of her resentment.
And the recording contained one more line.
Vanessa whispered while holding Lily’s braid:
“At least something good can come from everything she gets.”

Understanding that motive made me sad.
It did not make me forgive her.
