Chapter 12 - Vanessa Finally Told Lily the Truth

Three months passed before Lily agreed to see Vanessa.
The meeting was guided by Lily’s therapist.
I sat nearby.
Vanessa’s hair had grown into an uneven crop where I had run the clippers through it.
Every time I saw it, I regretted what I had done.
Not because Vanessa deserved gentleness that day.
Because I did not want Lily learning that humiliation became acceptable when you were angry enough.
Before the meeting, I told my daughter:
“Daddy did something wrong too.”
“What?”
“I cut Aunt Vanessa’s hair because I was mad.”
Lily thought about that.
“Like she did mine?”
“Not exactly. But I still shouldn’t have done it.”
“Are you in trouble?”
I almost smiled.
“I apologized. And I’m working on handling anger better.”
That mattered to say.
Then Vanessa came in.
She sat across from Lily.
“I cut your hair.”
Lily nodded.
“You said I did it.”
“I lied.”
“Why?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
She did not mention the miscarriage in detail.
That burden did not belong to Lily.
Instead she said:
“I was jealous of things that had nothing to do with you.”
“Of my hair?”
“Yes.”
Lily touched it.
“It’s shorter now.”
“I know.”
“Do you like it now?”
Vanessa started crying.
“No.”
Lily looked confused.
“Then why did you do it?”
“Because sometimes grown-ups have ugly feelings and make bad choices instead of getting help.”
That was the right answer.
Then Lily asked:
“Did people pay you?”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
“How much?”
I almost interrupted.
Her therapist let it continue.
“More than they should have.”
“Do I get it?”
Vanessa looked at me.
Then back at Lily.
“Yes.”
That had already been arranged.
Every identifiable dollar associated with Lily’s forced livestream was being placed into an account for Lily after refunds and legal obligations were handled appropriately.

Vanessa would not profit from what she did.
For the first time, the money followed the person who had actually paid the price.
