Chapter 7 - Lily Had Been Filmed Before

I had seen the Thanksgiving video.
I even laughed at it.
Lily kept turning around while Vanessa tried to braid her hair.
Harmless.
I thought.
Then I discovered there were more.
Lily getting curls.
Lily trying hair accessories.
Lily asleep while Vanessa gently braided one section.
Some were filmed during family gatherings.
Some while Vanessa babysat.
I had not approved most of them.
Individually, they looked innocent.
Together, they built a following.
Comments repeatedly praised Lily’s hair.
How thick it was.
How long.
How shiny.
One comment appeared dozens of times:
Never cut it!
Vanessa noticed.
Engagement increased whenever she featured Lily.
So did product sales.
Then Gavin contacted her.
Would she ever do a dramatic donation cut?
Vanessa said maybe.
He offered to sponsor it.
Still no crime if the person involved consented.
Except the person Vanessa chose was five.
And she never asked me.
Why?
Because she knew I would say no.
That was the pattern emerging beneath everything.
Vanessa did not believe consent mattered if she could later justify the result.
Money for a good cause.
Publicity for the salon.
Hair grows back.
Lily is young.
Daniel will get over it.
Every decision centered Vanessa.
Then we found a message she sent Gavin the night before.
My brother is sentimental about the hair. He can’t know until after.
Gavin replied:
Then don’t do it.
I stared at the message.
That mattered.
The man I had started imagining as the mastermind had explicitly told her not to proceed without parental permission.
Vanessa answered:
Relax. She’s basically my kid too.
That sentence made me feel physically sick.
She had transformed proximity into ownership.
And suddenly I remembered something Lily said weeks earlier.
“Aunt Vanessa says I’m her salon princess.”
I thought it was affection.
Maybe it had started that way.
Somewhere along the line, affection became entitlement.
But there was another message.
From Vanessa to someone saved as C.

I had no idea what my mother had signed.
