Chapter 2 - Lily Had Been Told Not to Call Me
I stopped the video.
Not because I didn’t want answers.
Because Lily was standing six feet away listening to herself cry.
That mattered more.
I crouched.
“Come here, sweetheart.”
She ran into me.
I put the yellow hat back over her head because she asked me to.
Then I took her home.
Vanessa called twelve times.
I answered none.
That evening, while Lily sat in the bathtub, she kept touching the uneven hair above her ear.
“Will it grow back?”
“Yes.”
“All of it?”
“Yes.”
She studied my face.
“Are you mad?”
“At you? Never.”
“At Aunt Vanessa?”
“Yes.”
Lily went quiet.
Then:
“She said you’d be mad at me if I called.”
That sentence tightened something inside my chest.
“Why?”
“Because I ruined her surprise.”
“What surprise?”
Lily shrugged.
“She said lots of people wanted my hair.”
The beauty room belonged to Vanessa’s small salon in Cincinnati.
She had asked to keep Lily for two hours while I attended a closing at work.
Nothing unusual.
Vanessa had been cutting my hair since college.
She had trimmed Lily’s hair before.
I trusted her.
That was my first mistake.
The second was assuming the livestream was simply some sick attempt at social-media attention.
After Lily went to sleep, I copied the recording.
Then I watched it from the beginning.
Vanessa had started filming before Lily entered the room.
She smiled at the camera and said:
“Today we’re doing the most emotional donation transformation I’ve ever shown you.”
Donation.
Then Lily appeared.
Confused.
Still wearing her long braid.
Vanessa told viewers Lily had “begged” to donate it.
Lily immediately said:
“No, I didn’t.”
Vanessa laughed.
“Kids get nervous.”
The comments raced past.
People sent money.
Digital tips.
Donations.
Then an account named HEARTS4HAIR posted:
$5,000 if you get the entire braid in one cut.
Vanessa looked directly at the comment.
And smiled.
That was the moment I understood.
