Chapter 3 - Hearts4Hair Didn’t Exist

The next morning, I did not confront Vanessa.
I called an attorney.
Then Lily’s pediatrician.
The small cut above her ear was superficial.
The emotional impact was harder to measure.
Lily repeatedly asked whether strangers had seen her crying.
I told her the truth.
“Yes.”
She covered her head with both hands.
That image stayed with me.
I also contacted the platform through the appropriate reporting process and preserved the original recording before requesting removal.
Then I investigated the name Vanessa had used.
Hearts4Hair.
There was no registered charity by that name in Ohio.
No legitimate donation organization I could find.
The payment links on Vanessa’s livestream went to an account she controlled.
That raised the obvious question.
“What was she supposedly raising money for?”
The answer was on Vanessa’s salon page.
A campaign launched four months earlier.
HELP CHILDREN FEEL BEAUTIFUL AGAIN.
Vanessa claimed she was collecting funds to make custom hairpieces for children experiencing medical hair loss.
There were photographs.
Testimonials.
Videos of Vanessa talking about dignity.
Compassion.
Community.
I almost wanted it to be legitimate.
Then I called three organizations Vanessa named as partners.
Two had never worked with her.
The third had received exactly one donated wig.
Value: approximately four hundred dollars.
Vanessa’s campaign had raised more than $37,000.
I sat there staring at the number.
Where had the money gone?
Then I remembered the male voice.
The buyers won’t pay if you ruin it.
I watched the livestream again.
At nineteen minutes, Vanessa stepped away to answer a call.
Lily remained in the chair.
She whispered toward the tablet:
“Daddy said nobody cuts it except me and Daddy choosing.”
Then she looked toward the door.
“Aunt Vanessa?”
No answer.
Lily stood.
She found Vanessa’s phone on the counter.
She picked it up.
The livestream captured only a corner of the screen.
But Lily read something aloud.
“Past due.”
Then:
“Forty-eight thousand…”
Vanessa rushed back.
She ripped the phone from Lily’s hand.
Her entire expression changed.
That was when she grabbed the scissors.

The haircut had not started because Lily agreed to donate.
It started immediately after Lily saw something Vanessa didn’t want repeated.
