Chapter 8 - My Mother Had Put Her Home Behind Vanessa’s Business

Mom had not simply refinanced her condo.
She had guaranteed part of Vanessa’s commercial debt.
I learned that through documents she voluntarily brought after I confronted her.
If Vanessa defaulted completely, Mom could lose much more than seventy thousand dollars.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because you would have stopped me.”
“Yes.”
“I couldn’t let your sister lose everything.”
“So you risked your home instead?”
“She built that salon from nothing.”
My mother said it like the building had feelings.
Then I understood why she was defending Vanessa so desperately.
If Vanessa’s business collapsed because of the livestream scandal, Mom’s finances could collapse with it.
The family wasn’t protecting Vanessa only out of love.
They were financially tied to her survival.
That made the next decision costly.
I formally withdrew permission for any use of Lily’s image, name, or likeness by Vanessa’s business and pursued removal of existing commercial content through the proper processes.
Vanessa called immediately.
“You’ll kill the salon.”
“My daughter is not your marketing plan.”
“Those videos pay my employees.”
“Then find another business model.”
“You don’t care who gets hurt.”
I almost laughed.
“You cut a five-year-old until she bled.”
“One tiny cut.”
That sentence ended the conversation.
The consequences began quickly.
Sponsors paused relationships.
Customers canceled.
The fake charity campaign drew scrutiny.
Refund requests appeared.
Vanessa’s landlord demanded overdue rent.
My mother blamed me.
“You could have handled this privately.”
“No.”
“You always think being right matters more than family.”
I looked at her.
“Family is exactly why it matters.”
Then Lily told me something else.
Vanessa had made her say a sentence before the livestream began.
“I want to help sick kids.”
Lily had repeated it because Vanessa promised afterward they would get ice cream.
The recording didn’t include that rehearsal.
But the tablet contained another saved clip.
A test recording.
And in that clip, Vanessa corrected Lily four times until the sentence sounded believable.
That was the moment my mother finally stopped defending her.

Because now even she could see this had not been panic.
It had been production.
