Chapter 10 - LINDA’S VERSION OF LOVE
Linda refused to apologize for months.
She complied with court orders.
Transferred trustee records.
Made payments under the preliminary settlement.
Sold some investments.
But emotionally?
Nothing.
Then Ryan stopped attending Sunday dinner.
Ethan stopped too.
Rachel came rarely.
Linda’s empire of family obligation collapsed.
She asked Ryan:
“What am I supposed to do with all of you abandoning me?”
He answered:
“Stop calling consequences abandonment.”
That sentence came from therapy.
I knew immediately.
Linda began counseling eventually.
Not because we demanded it.
Because she was lonely.
That may not sound noble.
Change often starts from selfish discomfort.
The question is what happens next.
Her first real insight came during mediation.
She said:
“I thought Walter’s trust was still family money because I was the one managing it.”
Patricia asked:
“Did you know Emily was beneficiary?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know transfers to Rachel’s company did not benefit Emily or the residence?”
Linda paused.
“Yes.”
“Then why?”
She cried.
“Because Rachel was going to lose everything.”
I said:
“So you chose what I could afford to lose for me.”
Linda looked at me.
That sentence landed.
She had never framed it that way.
I continued:
“You decided Rachel’s business mattered more than my security because you assumed I would tolerate it.”
Linda whispered:
May you like
“Yes.”
That was the first honest answer she gave me.
