Chapter 12 - RYAN CAME HOME

Ryan lived outside the house for nine months.
We dated during our marriage.
Strange sentence.
Accurate.
Coffee.
Walks.
Therapy.
One dinner where we argued for forty minutes about whether Linda should attend Thanksgiving.
Progress was not romantic.
It was uncomfortable.
He changed.
Not through speeches.
He stopped asking me to “let things go.”
He corrected Rachel when she used dismissive language.
He handled his mother without using me as excuse.
He admitted he had benefited from my silence.
That was difficult.
One evening he said:
“I thought because I never treated you like Mom and Rachel did, I was protecting you.”
“You weren’t.”
“I know.”
“You watched.”
“I know.”
“And sometimes you left the room because confrontation annoyed you.”
“Yes.”
That was the apology I needed.
Not:
I’m sorry my family is difficult.
His family had behavior.
He had choices.
I invited him home.
Not because the house belonged to me.
Because I wanted the marriage.
He moved in with two boxes.
I laughed.
“Where is everything?”
“Storage.”
“Why?”
He looked around.
“I wanted to come back as your husband, not as someone reclaiming space.”
That was dramatic.
May you like
A little cheesy.
It worked.
