Chapter 6 - RYAN MOVED OUT

I asked Ryan to leave.

Not permanently.

Not as punishment.

I needed space.

He packed one suitcase and moved into a hotel.

“I’ll stay as long as you need.”

“That sounds like a line.”

“It probably is.”

I almost smiled.

Then didn’t.

We started marriage counseling.

The therapist asked:

“What did Ryan do?”

I said:

“He let his family define my place.”

Ryan nodded.

The therapist asked:

“What did Emily do?”

That annoyed me.

Then I answered.

“I tolerated it until I hated everyone.”

That was also true.

I had kept peace.

Smiled.

Washed dishes.

Accepted keys.

Allowed Linda to rearrange rooms.

Let Rachel order staff in my house.

Then resentment became part of my identity.

Passivity had been my survival strategy.

It also helped the system continue.

Again:

That did not make their behavior my fault.

Responsibility is not always equal.

But healing required examining my part without confusing it with blame.

Ryan apologized for slapping Rachel too.

He sent it through counsel because Rachel requested no direct contact.

I was surprised.

“Why apologize?”

“Because I hit her.”

“She was hurting me.”

“That explains why I was furious. It doesn’t make it my best choice.”

That mattered.

He was learning precision.

So was I.
